The Best of Brought To Life - 071

1. THE OFFENDERS - 'Fight Back' - R Radical LP - USA - 1983
We'll begin with some mean-sounding Texas hardcore from The Offenders, namely the opening track from 'We Must Rebel'. There's some early live material here.
2. D.O.A. - 'D.O.A.' - Friends LP - Canada - 1981
Probably too short to be seriously considered an album, 'Hardcore '81' nevertheless was so good that you're gonna get at least half the tracks on this sampler.
3. FUNBOY 5 - 'All This And More' - X-Cassettes - UK - 1981
A lot of D.I.Y. cassettes from the early '80s were either (i) so badly recorded they were unlistenable, (ii) too experimental, or (iii) had too much crap on them. None of these were true for 'Anything Could Happen In The Next Half Hour'. This is the first of 5 tracks from said cassette.
4. DIRECT ACTION - '19AD4' - Demo - Canada - 1984
From Toronto. The '84 demos are available on the 'Damn-Age' LP released by Bitzcore in '88.
5. YOUTH YOUTH YOUTH - 'Philosophy' - Fringe Product 12" - Canada - 1983
From their sole release, the 7-track 12" E.P. 'Sin'. Also from Toronto.
6. D.O.A. - 'Unknown'Friends LP - Canada - 1981
A second track from 'Hardcore '81'. Here's a live version from 2010.
7. MAD PARADE - 'Right Is Right' - Toxic Shock 7" - USA - 1986
After their initial spurt in the mid-80s, L.A. band Mad Parade continued to release records throughout the '90s and beyond. This is from one of their earlier 3-song 7"s. Here's a video of sorts.
8. THE ORIGINAL VAMPIRES - 'Windows'X-Cassettes - UK - 1981
A second track from 'Anything Could Happen In The Next Half Hour'. Lo-Fi pop genius.
9. D.O.A. - 'I Don't Give A Shit' - Friends LP - Canada - 1981
A third track from 'Hardcore '81'.
10. DIRECT ACTION - 'Tomorrow Is Too Late' - Irate Faction LP - Canada - 1985
From 'Trapped In A World', their only release at the time. The guitar isn't as raw as on the '84 demos, but the songs are still worthy.
11. THE OFFENDERS - 'I Hate Myself' - Rabid Cat 7" - USA - 1984
The speed of light guitar riff and frantic bass playing lift this one above the standard hardcore fare.
12. D.O.A. - 'M.C.T.F.D.'Friends LP - Canada - 1981
A fourth track from 'Hardcore '81'. It stands for Middle Class Television Family Daughter.
13. MAD PARADE - 'Mother's Little Helper'Toxic Shock 7" - USA - 1986
A Rolling Stones cover, from the flipside of 'Right Is Right'.
14. YOUTH YOUTH YOUTH - 'Greed' - Fringe Product 12" - Canada - 1983
Another from 'Sin'. 'Your sympathetic eyes attempt to hide the lies, the problem is they often hide the truth'.
15. D.O.A. - 'Smash The State' - Friends LP - Canada - 1981
A fifth track from 'Hardcore '81'.
16. THE OFFENDERS - 'Bad Times'Rabid Cat 7" - USA - 1984
The flipside of 'I Hate Myself'. The intro lasts 2:10 but stick with it as it then blasts into more high-speed mayhem.
17. FUNBOY 5 - 'Angela Ripon' - X-Cassettes - UK - 1981
A third track from 'Anything Could Happen In The Next Half Hour'.
18. D.O.A. - '001 Losers Club' - Friends LP - Canada - 1981
A sixth from 'Hardcore '81'. 'Violence in the street, it's alright with me, it just depends who it's against'.
19. QUALITY DRIVEL - 'Segregation'X-Cassettes - UK - 1981
A fourth track from 'Anything Could Happen In The Next Half Hour'.
20. THE ORIGINAL VAMPIRES - 'Johnny Clarke'X-Cassettes - UK - 1981
Followed by a fifth from 'Anything Could Happen . . .'  It's tragic that this lot didn't seem to make any records of their own.
21. D.O.A. - 'Fucked Up Baby' - Friends LP - Canada - 1981
A seventh from 'Hardcore '81'.
22. YOUTH YOUTH YOUTH - 'Fire In The Rain' - Fringe Product 12" - Canada - 1983
And a third from 'Sin'. 'The flame that won't go out'.
23. DIRECT ACTION - 'One Tin Soldier'  Irate Faction LP - Canada - 1985
Another cover version, from 'Trapped In A World'. An anti-war song made popular by '60s Canadian band The Original Caste which reads like a wise old fairy tale.
24. D.O.A. - 'Waiting For You' - Friends LP - Canada - 1981
And why not? An eighth track from 'Hardcore '81'.
25. THE OFFENDERS - 'You Keep Me Hanging On' - Radid Cat LP - USA - 1985
The Offenders second album 'Endless Struggle' was just that. The highlight for me was the last track cover version with a devastating guitar bit at the end. It blows the Supremes away, man.

***BONUS TRACKS***

27. D.O.A. - 'My Old Man's A Bum' / 'Bloodsucker Baby'
28. YOUTH YOUTH YOUTH - 'The One In The Middle'
