The Best of Brought To Life - 227

1. SPECIAL DUTIES - 'Colchester Council' - Charnel House 7" - UK - 1981
We'll begin this English-heavy selection with the flipside of the Duties' debut single. A definite Clash/Menace influence here!
2. CHEMICAL PEOPLE - 'New Food' - Cruz LP - USA - 1989
'10 Fold Hate' blows away 'So Sexist!' in almost every department. Who'd they been listening to?
3. ENGLISH DOGS - 'Max (The Millionaire)' - Clay MLP - UK - 1983
The opening track from 'Mad Punx and English Dogs'. It was oh so promising . . .
4. THE WASPS - 'Teenage Treats' - Peel Session - UK - 1977
Different enough from the single version to include it here.
5. THE BUSINESS - 'Blind Justice' - Secret LP - UK - 1983
From their 'Suburban Rebels' LP. UKDK interview/live footage here.
6. THE COCKNEY REJECTS - 'Oi! Oi! Oi!'EMI LP - UK - 1980
Oi was an invention of the music press (i.e. Garry Bushell from 'Sounds') to describe and market early '80s street punk. As a marketing tool, I suppose it worked. It all started here with 'Oi! The Album'.
7. SPECIAL DUTIES - 'Police State' - Rondelet 7" - UK - 1982
The title track from their second E.P. of the same name.
8. ENGLISH DOGS - 'Your Country' - Clay LP - UK - 1984
Sigh . . . one of the few good tracks from 'Invasion Of The Porky Men'.
9. CHEMICAL PEOPLE - 'Aquaman'Cruz LP - USA - 1989
A second track from '10 Fold Hate'.
10. THE BUSINESS - 'Loud Proud 'n' Punk' - Total Noise 7" - UK - 1982
From the 'Total Noise' compilation E.P.  Hardly an accurate description but an anthemic song nonetheless.
11. SPECIAL DUTIES - 'Bullshit Crass' - Rondelet 7" - UK - 1982
The single that caused all the controversy. 'Fight Crass not punk'. You can see why. There were a million definitions but Crass were punk in most people's eyes.
12. THE 4 SKINS - 'Chaos' - EMI LP - UK - 1980
Another track from 'Oi! The Album'. The reputation skinheads had, sadly, meant the humour sailed over many people's heads.
13. ENGLISH DOGS - 'Psycho Killer'Clay MLP - UK - 1983
My favourite track of theirs by a country mile. From 'Mad Punx and English Dogs'. They were never to hit these heights again until 2008's excellent 'Tales From The Asylum'.
14. THE BUSINESS -  'Suburban Rebels' - Secret LP - UK - 1983
The title track from 'Suburban Rebels'.
15. CHEMICAL PEOPLE - 'Ed Intro' / 'Cherry'Cruz LP - USA - 1989
A third and fourth track from '10 Fold Hate'.
16. SPECIAL DUTIES - 'You're Doing Yourself No Good'Rondelet 7" - UK - 1982
'You're doing yourself no good, you're fighting your fellow man.' The flipside of 'Bullshit Crass'. Oh the hypocrisy!
17. THE WASPS - 'Run Run Angelica' - Peel Session - UK - 1978
The highpoint of their second Peel session.
18. ENGLISH DOGS - 'Ambassador Of Fear' - Rot 12" - UK - 1984
Then the metal crept in . . . from 'To The Ends Of The Earth' - a 4-song E.P.
19. THE BUSINESS - 'Smash The Discos' - Secret 7" - UK - 1982
We all hated disco music but, locally, a few discos actually played our punk records so we couldn't support this kind of nonsense!
20. CHEMICAL PEOPLE - 'Nudist Camp' - Cruz LP - USA - 1989
A fifth track from '10 Fold Hate'.
21. THE GONADS - 'Tucker's Ruckers Aint No Suckers'EMI LP - UK - 1980
A third track from 'Oi! The Album'.
22. SPECIAL DUTIES - 'Punk Rocker' - Expulsion 7" - UK - 1983
Their final single of the '80s. Possibly their best.
23. ENGLISH DOGS - 'False Prophet' - Rot LP - UK - 1985
And the metal continued . . . From 'Forward Into Battle'.
24. THE BUSINESS - 'Real Enemy'Secret LP - UK - 1983
A third track from 'Suburban Rebels'.
25. CHEMICAL PEOPLE - 'Vacation' - Cruz LP - USA - 1989
And a sublime Go-Go's cover. From '10 Fold Hate', of course.
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. SPECIAL DUTIES - 'We Gotta Fight' (from 'Police State' E.P.)
27. ENGLISH DOGS - 'Mercenary' (from 'Invasion Of The Porky Men')
28. CHEMICAL PEOPLE - 'All The Best Things' (from '10 Fold Hate')
29. THE 4 SKINS - 'Evil' (from 'Carry On Oi')
30. SPECIAL DUTIES - 'It Just Aint Me' (from 'Police State' E.P.)
31. CHEMICAL PEOPLE - 'She's Got A Bad Case' (from '10 Fold Hate')
32. ENGLISH DOGS - 'The Chase Is On' (from 'To The Ends Of The Earth')

  1. replace the chemical people with more cockney rejects, more 4skins, and some blitz and this would be a great soundtrack to my high school years.

    1. Well, I think I've covered all the best Blitz songs but there's plenty more of the others on the next few compilations!
