The Best of Brought To Life - 178

1. THE DESCENDENTS - 'Wendy' - New Alliance/Restless LP - USA - 1986
Third album 'Enjoy' is a mix of bittersweet love songs, post-teen angst and a touch of toilet humour. No change there, then.
2. THE LEPERS - 'I Wanna Be God' - Unclean 7" - USA - 1984
The lead track from the third and final E.P. from this Boulder, Colorado band. Great intro.
3. THE VOODOO IDOLS - ''Dead Air' - Veedee 7" - USA - 1982
The superior flipside of second single 'We Dig Nixon'. Florida's finest, if it wasn't for The Eat.
4. REBEL TRUTH - 'Things Have Got To Change' - Demo - USA - 1982
Thankfully, you can get all their recorded output on the 40-track 'Everybody Hates Everybody, Nobody Loves Anybody' Grand Theft Audio CD. Essential listening.

A second track from 'Enjoy'.
7. THE FRUIT EATING BEARS - '1.30, 2.30, 3.35' - Demo - UK - 1978

This one's from their second E.P. 'God's Inhumane'.

1. THE REALTORS - 'Guilty By Association' - Realty 7" - USA - 1979
From their 'Buy Or Beware' E.P. Reminds me of the Hypnotics, but this came first. There's a Rave Up album available if you want more, though it's probably harder to find than the E.P.
2. THE AFFECTIVES - 'Rich Bitch 17' - Criss Cross 12" - USA - 1982
From their sole 'Unrequited Love' E.P.  An all-girl trio from NYC.
3. SCOOTER AND THE WORMS - 'Sharon In Shades' - Self-released 7" - USA - 1982

4. THE WRECKS - 'Couldn't Believe It' - Self-released cassette - USA - 1982
How great is this? Another all-girl band, this time from Reno, Nevada. Their 'Teenage Jive' cassette was their only recorded output. A tragedy.
5. SCREAMING URGE - 'We Are Mono' - Garner LP - USA - 1980
From their eponymous first album. In case you hadn't noticed, some of the tracks here are featured on the excellent 'Hyped To Death' compilations, essential listening for anyone with a penchant for gnarly, obscure punk rock. Get them here.
6. THE WEIRDOS - 'It Means Nothing' - Demo - USA - 1981

7. RONNIE & THE RAYGUNS - 'Nancy's China' - Broken Dish 7" - USA - 1982
Sole single, about how the U.S. economy was (allegedly) based around the state china collection that Nancy Reagan ordered that year. It was actually funded by private donations but everyone got upset anyway as the economy was in recession at the time.

12. THE DESCENDENTS - 'Pervert' - New Alliance LP - USA - 1985
'I Don't Want To Grow Up' is no 'Milo Goes To College', but it's a solid second album nonetheless. The lyrics could be better, however.

From their 'Jagged Edge' E.P.  From Santa Cruz.
14. THE RAUNCHETTES - 'What?! Scuz Me?!?' - Bomp! 12" - USA - 1987

From their sole 'Four Song E.P.' E.P.
22. TEENAGE DEPRESSION - 'Frat Party' - Bulldada 7" - USA - 1984
If you can't understand the words it's because the singer was on a combination of 9 Class A drugs at the time of this recording. From their sole 'Skank Or Die' E.P.

From their 'Mental Decay' album. Read more here.
25. THE SKUNKS - 'Gimme Some' - Skunks 2 x 7" - USA - 1979

The Best of Brought To Life - 176

1. THE DARLING BUDS - 'Shame On You' - Epic LP - UK - 1988
Ah, the Darling Buds. 'Pop Said' is perfect pop album, with some of those versions being better that the actual singles. I remember sacrificing a night on the beer to drive a bunch of us up to Newcastle to see them support the Wonderstuff way back when. I was less than amused to find all three of my passengers had just necked a bag of mushies before I picked 'em up. Still, it didn't detract that much from a pop-tastic night, even though the petal-throwing was a bit much.
2. PERDITION - 'Nothing For You' - Reactor 7" - Australia - 1984
The lead track from the 'Intoxicated' E.P. which got a better-sounding 12" release the year after.
3. THE DESCENDENTS - 'I'm Not A Loser' - New Alliance LP - USA - 1982
Last time around I posted a bunch of stuff from 'Milo Goes To College' I was reluctant to leave a few tracks out. I'm putting that right here.

Stiv's first solo single, a cover of the Pebbles classic by The Choir. R.I.P. Stiv.

18. THE DEAD AIRMEN - 'Search And Destroy' - Demo - UK - 1979
Whereas this one can be found on an unreleased acetate with the Vox Phantoms. And as you won't be able to find that, get Bored Teenagers Vol.6 instead.

The Best of Brought To Life - 173

1. THE DEAD KENNEDYS - 'Soup Is Good Food' - Alternative Tentacles LP - USA - 1985
Well, the H.R. Giger poster and the court case that followed somewhat overshadowed 'Frankenchrist' as an album. It's a strange one too, with psychedelic and even spaghetti western influences, it's by far the most diverse musical record they ever did. This was the opening track.
2. S.O.B. - 'Not Me' - Selfish 7" - Japan - 1986
Meanwhile, there's nothing diverse about S.O.B.  Thrash, bang, wallop . . . end. The opening track from first E.P. 'Leave Me Alone'.
3. SHAM 69 - 'What Have We Got?' - unlabelled 7" - UK - 1977
The infamous 'Song Of The Streets' one-sided freebie which was mostly given away at gigs.
4. HELLHOUND - 'Ota Mut Vielä Uudestaan' - Rokit 7" - Finland - 1979
The flipside of second single 'Pakoon Neonarmeijaa'. It's 'Suzy Is A Headbanger' with different lyrics, though don't ask me to translate.
5. THE BUREAUCRATS - 'Bureaucracy' - Demo - Canada - 1979
Finally made available in 2000 on a belated eponymous retro album.
6. THE RESISTERS - 'Affront' - Trikont LP - UK - 1979
From their sole German-released album. Anti-nazi, of course.
7. SHAM 69 - 'There's Gonna Be A Borstal Breakout' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1978
Their first single for Polydor. Live at Reading here.
8. THE REBELS - 'Pop Star' - Demo - UK - 1979
Available on the 'Misspent Youth' retro album on Knock Out.
9. THE TRADEMARKS - 'It's Up To You' - Take It! flexi - USA - 1981
From pop stars to powerpop. A freebie from 'Take It!' magazine.
10. S.O.B. - 'Give Me Advice' - Selfish 7" - Japan - 1986
A second track from 'Leave Me Alone'.
11. SHAM 69 - 'Angels With Dirty Faces' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1978
Their fourth single. 'Allo mum, whos on Top Of The Pops then?'
12. THE BUREAUCRATS - 'Today And Every Day' - Demo - Canada - 1979
Another track from their eponymous retro album.
13. S.O.B. - 'Leave Me Alone' - Selfish 7" - Japan - 1986
A third track from, you guessed it, 'Leave Me Alone'.
14. THE DEAD KENNEDYS - 'Hellnation' - Alternative Tentacles LP - USA - 1985
And another track from 'Frankenchrist'.
15. SHAM 69 - 'If The Kids Are United' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1978
Their fifth single, but there wasn't much uniting going on.
