The Best of Brought To Life - 220

1. PETER & THE TEST-TUBE BABIES - 'Elvis Is Dead' – Peel Session – UK - 1980
This was my first encounter with the band. Late night, headphones on, good old Peely. Couldn't wait to share the experience at school the next day.
2. INDIGESTI - 'Mass Media' - Self-released 7" - Italy - 1982
From their split E.P. with Wretched. One of many great hardcore E.P.s from the region that year.
3. THE SOUP DRAGONS - 'Quite Content' - Subway Organization 7" - UK - 1986
The lead track from their debut E.P. which was only available by mail order. The label was going bust and many people parted with their cash and still didn't get a copy.
4. THE NORMALS - 'Noisy Neighbours' - Demo - Canada - 1978
Thanks go to Gary F. (again) for introducing me to 'MTL Punk' the DVD/CD which is a brash showcase of the first wave of Montreal punk bands. Unmissable. This is from the CD which can be purchased here.
5. PETER & THE TEST-TUBE BABIES - 'Run Like Hell' - No Future LP - UK - 1982
From 'Pissed And Proud', their debut album. Although it was recorded live I still prefer this version to the single.
6. THE SELECTER - 'Three Minute Hero' - Two Tone LP - UK - 1980
The opening track from debut album 'Too Much Pressure' which was also a hit single. Energetic TOTP performance here.
7. WRETCHED - 'Usa La Tua Rabbia' Self-released 7" - Italy - 1982
From the split E.P. with Indigesti. Suitably brutal.
8. THE UNTAMED - 'Judgement Call' - Demo - UK - 1989
Not long before calling it a day, The Untamed got hold of a portastudio and while trying to get to grips with it they recorded some rough demos which shows they were still writing good songs while developing their sound. The record labels, sadly, were looking elsewhere . . .
9. INDIGESTI - 'Astratto Concepimento' - Hysterya cassette - Italy - 1982
From their debut cassette 'Sguardo Realtà', shortly before bashing out another on Bad Compilation Tapes.
10. THE CHROMOSOMES - 'Batman's On Drugs' - Demo - Canada - 1978
More craziness from the 'MTL Punk' dual pack.
11. THE SOUP DRAGONS - 'Swirling Around The Garden With You' Subway Organization 7" - UK - 1986
A second track from their debut E.P.
12. THE SELECTER - 'Carry Go Bring Come' - Two Tone LP - UK - 1980
A second track from 'Too Much Pressure'.
13. WRETCHED - 'Solo Guerra' - Self released 7" - Italy - 1983
This one's from their rabid first solo E.P. 'In Nome Del Loro Potere Tutto E' Stato Fatto'.
14. THE NORMALS - 'I Wanna Be Considered A Nice Guy' - Demo - Canada - 1978
A third track from 'MTL Punk'.
15. PETER & THE TEST-TUBE BABIES - 'Shit Stirrer' No Future LP - UK - 1982
A second track from 'Pissed And Proud'.
16. INDIGESTI - 'Nessuna Ragione' Hysterya cassette - Italy - 1982
Another track from their debut cassette 'Sguardo Realtà'
17. THE SELECTER - 'On My Radio' - Two Tone 7" - UK - 1979
Their biggest hit. The jaunty visuals are here.
18. THE UNTAMED - 'Next Please' (Rock 'n' Roll version) - Demo - UK - 1989
A swanky version of one of the tracks from their single.
19. WRETCHED - 'Finirá Mai' - Self released 7" - Italy - 1984
The title track from their second solo E.P.
20. THE NORMALS - 'Poser' - Demo - Canada - 1978
A fourth track from 'MTL Punk'.
21. THE SOUP DRAGONS - 'Fair's Fair' Subway Organization 7" - UK - 1986
A third track from their debut E.P.
22. THE SELECTER - 'Too Much Pressure' - Two Tone LP - UK - 1980
The title track from the album of the same name.
23. ELECTRIC VOMIT - 'Treasure Hunt' - Demo - Canada - 1979
A fifth track from 'MTL Punk'.
24. PETER & THE TEST-TUBE BABIES - 'Intensive Care' No Future LP - UK - 1982
A third track from 'Pissed And Proud'.
25. THE NORMALS - 'Throwing Up (My Hands)' - Demo - Canada - 1978

30. INDIGESTI - 'No Al Sistema' (from the split E.P. with Wretched)
31. THE UNTAMED - 'Searching' (Long Version) (Demo '89)

The Best of Brought To Life - 219

1. THE FRED BANANA COMBO - 'No Destination Blues' - Ariola LP - Germany - 1980
I've featured the first Fred Banana Combo album before but such is the quality you really need to hear more tracks.
2. XTC - 'Crosswires' - Peel Session - UK - 1977
This lot were a bit left-field in '77 but the punk explosion gave such a band a chance and they took it with gusto.
3. THE BEAT - 'Click Click' - Peel Session - UK - 1979
Haven't had much ska recently so here's another Peel session classic.
4. THE NEON HEARTS - 'Other Great Sex Pros' - Peel Session - UK - 1979
And another great session from the same year with tracks that should have been on their slightly disappointing album.
5. PETER & THE TEST-TUBE BABIES - 'Oral Annie' - Demo - UK - 1979
The early Test-tubes' demos were finally released in 1985 as the 'Loud, Blaring Punk Rock' album. This was the opening track.
6. WASTED LIVES - 'Wirehead' - Pinned LP - Canada - 1979
And while Peter & Co. were recording their demos, over in Canada we got this little gem from the 'Vancouver Complication' album. More tracks at a later date but since this and another of their tracks were featured on the 'Phil Smith Album' from '83, you're getting it here.
7. THE UNTAMED - 'Love Drug' - Demo - UK - 1984
We all need a good local band to follow around once in a while and this was ours. Three good lads from Fishburn and a singer from Sedgefield where we all went to school. Thanks to Rod for digging up the demos.
8. THE FRED BANANA COMBO - 'Idi Amin' Ariola LP - Germany - 1980
Most songs about Idi Amin are, like the man, ridiculous. This is no exception.
9. THE BEAT - 'Mirror In The Bathroom' - Peel Session - UK - 1979
A second track from their Peel session, which gave them a hit. Official video here.
10. BLANCHE WHITMAN - 'Dark Ages' - Zulu LP - Canada - 1983
The opening track from the aforementioned 'Phil Smith' album which contained 4 bands who Phil was a member of.
11. PETER & THE TEST-TUBE BABIES - 'Vicars Wank Too' Demo - UK - 1979
I'm sure they do. And worse. Another track from 'Loud Blaring Punk Rock'.
12. THE UNTAMED - 'Happyland' - Flexi-disc - UK - 1986
From their first vinyl (a dodgy quality flexi disc that I gave away with '10 Years On' issue 7). Well, 'gave away' is not strictly true - I did hike the price of the 'zine up to pay for it!
13. THE FRED BANANA COMBO - 'Runaway' Ariola LP - Germany - 1980
A third track from their classic debut. Shame they didn't attempt the falsetto part though!
14. THE NEON HEARTS - 'Rings Of Confidence' - Peel Session - UK - 1979
Another great Peel session track.
15. THE PROTEENS - 'Plastic People' - Demo - USA - 1981
From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They made no records of their own but this one did surface on the 'Bloodstains Over Pennsylvania' album.
16. PETER & THE TEST-TUBE BABIES - 'Beat Up The Mods' Demo - UK - 1979
A third track from 'Loud Blaring Punk Rock'. It was an issue in Brighton, I guess.
17. THE UNTAMED - 'Game Of Chance' - Live - UK - 1985
Recorded at Hawick Town Hall (just over the Scottish border) in April of that year. A bunch of us went up with the band on a booze-fuelled coach and had a whale of a time.
18. THE FRED BANANA COMBO - 'Boxer Dog' Ariola LP - Germany - 1980
A fourth track from their s/t debut.
19. XTC - 'Into The Atom Age' - Peel Session - UK - 1977
Another track from their first Peel session.
20. THE BEAT - 'Tears Of A Clown' - Peel Session - UK - 1979
And a third track from theirs.
21. WASTED LIVES - 'Undercover' Zulu LP - Canada - 1983
Their other track from the Phil Smith album which I assume was recorded in '79.
22. THE FRED BANANA COMBO - 'My Girl' Ariola LP - Germany - 1980
A fifth track from their s/t debut.
23. THE UNTAMED - 'One Of The Boys' - Live - UK - 1985
This one was recorded at Oddy's club in Oldham in October of '85. I was there but I got completely fucked-up on home brew and was thrown out well before the bands came on.
24. PETER & THE TEST-TUBE BABIES - 'Get 'em In (And Get 'em Off)' - Demo - UK - 1979
A fourth track from 'Loud Blaring Punk Rock'.
25. THE NEON HEARTS - 'Body Language' - Peel Session - UK - 1979
And a third track from the classic '79 Peel session.
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. THE UNTAMED - 'Yesterday' (Demo '84)
27. THE FRED BANANA COMBO - 'Radio' (from s/t LP)

30. THE NEON HEARTS - 'Roll On Deodorant' (from '79 Peel Session)
31. THE FRED BANANA COMBO - 'Lonely Hearts Hotel' (from s/t LP)
32. THE UNTAMED - 'Cause' (from the '10 Years On' flexi-disc)

The Best of Brought To Life - 218

1. R.K.L. - 'Political Destruction' - Mystic 7" - USA - 1984
Ah, the Rich Kids on LSD. Energetic, if a tad generic (a word we all used on a regular basis in the mid-'80s). This was from their debut E.P. 'It's A Beautiful Feeling' which if I remember rightly was the only 7" they did (aside from their albums, of course).
2. THE ENIGMAS - 'Teenage Barnacle' - Mystery 12" - Canada - 1983
Remember this lot from the 'Merry Christmas 1985' E.P.? Well, they released a couple of 12" E.P.s before that. This is from the first of those with oceanic metaphors abound.
3. THE SOUP DRAGONS - 'Whole Wide World' - Subway Organization 7"/12" - UK - 1986
When the Soup Dragons hit the scene it felt like a bit of a Buzzcocks revival, even though it wasn't. This was their second single.
4. THE NECROS - 'Police Brutality' - Demo - USA - 1980
From the Clubhouse demos which finally got released in the '90s as 'The Early Days' E.P.
5. BAGS OF DIRT - 'Spidas' - No Label 7" - Canada - 1984
From a mysterious Halloween sampler called 'Hollow Weiners'. Get the whole thing here.
6. THE GARLIC BOYS - 'Yokozuna' - Wild West 7" - Japan - 1989
In the '80s the Garlic Boys (from Osaka) were fun! Then came the '90s and the dreaded metal phase . . .
7. THE SOUP DRAGONS - 'Hang-Ten!' - Raw TV Products 7" - UK - 1986
Their third single. Horrible sleeve but nice red vinyl. Also available as a 12" E.P.
8. ACTIVES - 'Riot' - Quiet 7" - UK - 1983
Right, enough tunes, let's get back to basics and riot! (The lead track from their debut E.P.) From Dunfirmline, Fife.
9. THE NECROS - 'Rip-Off' - Demo - USA - 1980
The Necros covering Sham. And it works a treat!
10. PUTRID FEVER - 'Life Is Pain' - Belfagor 7" - Italy - 1985
It sure is! The lead track from their slightly metallic (in places) E.P.
11. THE GARLIC BOYS - 'I Want Your Panty' - Alchemy 12" - Japan - 1989
With a title like that the song could suck for all I care. Thankfully, it doesn't. Quite. From the 'King Of Smell' MLP.
12. THE SOUP DRAGONS - 'Slow Things Down'Raw TV Products 7" - UK - 1986
The flipside of 'Hang Ten!'
13. DIG MA'S GRAVE - 'My Dead Zoo'No Label 7" - Canada - 1985
From 'Very Scary Cemetary' - the 1985 Halloween follow-up to 'Hollow Weiners'. It's a B-movie Horror Channel type affair, but entertaining enough.
14. ACTIVES - 'Kick It Down' - Quiet LP - UK - 1983
The lead track from their album of the same name.
15. R.K.L. - 'Think Positive' - Mystic LP - USA - 1985
Does the riffage make up for the tuneless vocals? At the time, it sure did!
16. THE NECROS - 'Better Never Than Late' - Demo - USA - 1980
Another great-sounding demo from the 'Early Days' E.P.
17. THE SOUP DRAGONS - 'I Know Everything' -  Subway Organization 7"/12" - UK - 1986
The flipside of 'Whole Wide World'.
18. THE ENIGMAS - 'Flying Dutchman' - Zulu 12" - Canada - 1985
The lead track from their second E.P. 'Strangely Wild'. Get the whole thing (and much of their other stuff) here.
19. TARTAN HAGGIS - 'Loch Ness Monster'No Label 7" - Canada - 1984
Another insane track from 'Hollow Weiners' with as many Scottish inflections you could shake a caber at.
20. THE GARLIC BOYS - 'King Of Smell' -  Alchemy 12" - Japan - 1989
The title track from the E.P.
21. THE SOUP DRAGONS - 'Head Gone Astray' - Raw TV Products 7"/12" - UK - 1987
Their last really good single. After this they got more popular as their music got less interesting. Go figure.
22. THE NECROS - 'What Have We Got?' - Demo - USA - 1980
'No hair!' The Necros with twist another Sham anthem into the realms of comedy, if they weren't there already . . .
23. THE ACTIONAUTS - 'Hash Assassin' - Zulu 7" - Canada - 1983
A bit of powerpop now, their sole single.
24. THE GARLIC BOYS - 'My Teenage Heart' -
From the flipside of 'Yokozuna'.
25. ACTIVES - 'Wait And See' - Quiet 12" - UK - 1984
And the lead track from final E.P. (at the time).
***BONUS TRACKS***

The Best of Brought To Life - 217

1. THE STALIN - 'Title in Japanese Characters’ - Climax LP - Japan -1982
Otherwise known as Track 7 from 'Stop Jap'.
2. THE UNDEAD - 'Sanctuary' - Riot City LP - UK -1982
From the 'Riotous Assembly' comp. Better than their album version, methinks.
3. THE WARDENS - 'Do So Well' - Snu-Peas 7" - UK - 1979
One of those catchy powerpop numbers with a groovy bassline. The superior flipside to 'Last Like This'.
4. THE SPY'S - 'Underground' - 007 7" - Canada - 1980
Sole single, from Windsor, Ontario.
5. THE ACTION - 'TV's On The Blink' - Montreco 12" - Canada - 1977
More nice bass work. From their sole E.P.  although Rave Up found more stuff and bashed it all out in 2009.
6. THE UNDEAD - 'Life Of Our Own' - Stiff 7" - USA - 1982
This is the American Undead fronted by one time Misfit Bobby Steele. From their debut E.P. 'Nine Toes Later'.
7. BATTERED WIVES - 'Angry Young Man' - Bomb LP - Canada - 1978
One from their self-titled debut album.
8. THE ZITS - 'Beat Your Face' -Olympic 7" - USA - 1981
Wild Devil Man posted this recently which I'd deliberately overlooked as the A-side didn't seem memorable enough. How I overlooked this wonderful flipside however is anyone's guess.
9. THE TEA SET - 'Tri X Pan' - Waldo's 7" - UK - 1979
The superior flipside of their second 7" 'Parry Thomas'.
10. THE GORDONS - 'Future Shock' - Gordons 7" - New Zealand - 1980
Post-punk noise-time now with New Zealands noisiest band (at the time). This was their debut single.
11. THE UNDEAD - 'Never Say Die' - Post Mortem 7" - USA - 1985
Bobby & Co.'s third single.
12. MAJOR ACCIDENT - 'Standing On The Sidelines' - Demo - UK - 1981
Available on the 'Clockwork Demos' album on Captain Oi!
13. THE BODGERS - 'Stutter' - Bodger 7" - UK - 1982
Hilarious or cruel? I suppose it depends upon whether any of 'em actually had such a speech impediment. Doesn't it?
14. WARSAW - '(I Do) Like The Natives' - Friends 8" flexi - Canada - 1980
This one's a grower, about the pros and cons of foreign travel. Mostly the cons. Not-bad sounding for a flexi disc.
15. THE STALIN - 'Stop Jap' - Climax LP - Japan -1982
The title track from 'Stop Jap'.
16. THE DEFECTS - 'Head On Collision' - WXYZ LP - UK - 1983
Their finest moment, from the 'Defective Breakdown' album.
17. THE UNDEAD - 'The Way We Behave' - Post Mortem LP - USA - 1989
It took 'em a while to finally release an album ('Act Your Rage!') and this is one of the better tracks on it.
18. THE OFFS - 'Bye Bye Baby' - CD Presents LP - USA - 1984
From 'The Offs First Record' which wasn't actually their first. All punk influences had gone by this point and this, the album's ska-tinged closer, is about the only track worth posting on a blog like this.
19. ZRO4 - 'Give Me Attention' - Demo - Canada - 1980
Available on the 'Punk History Canada Presents: Only In Canada, Eh 77-81 Volume 1' CD.
20. THE SPYS - 'Machine Shop' -
The hilarious flipside of 'Underground'. 'Lots of noise, lots of boys.'  So macho!
21. THE BODGERS - 'I Hate Phoning Girls' - Bodger 7" - UK - 1982
The flipside of 'Stutter'.
22. THE UNDEAD - 'Undead' - Post Mortem LP - USA - 1989
A second track from 'Act Your Rage!'
23. SLANDER - 'Petticoat Junction' - North Shore LP - Canada - 1981
From sole LP 'Hemi-Conscious' with possibly the stoopidest backing vocals of all time?
24. MAYHEM - 'Psycho' - Riot City LP - UK -1982
A second track from 'Riotous Assembly'.
25. THE GORDONS - 'Coalminers Song' -Gordons LP - New Zealand - 1981
The cacophony which was their self-titled debut album all crystallised for me with this guitar-driven epic.
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. THE UNDEAD - 'Evening Of Desire' (from 'Act Your Rage!')
27. THE STALIN - 'Title in Japanese Characters' (Track 8 from 'Stop Jap')
28. BATTERED WIVES - 'Everybody Loves A Loser' (from the s/t LP)

2. NERVOUS EATERS - 'Hot Steel And Acid' - Ace Of Hearts LP - USA - 1986
The title track of their second album, released a mere six years after the first!
3. THE UNDEAD - 'It's Corruption' - Riot City 7" - UK - 1982
Some nice tribal drumming from their debut single.
4. SIGGY MAGIC & THE HEY-HOE BAND - 'Commercials For Free' - Self-Released 7" - Canada - 1978
From their sole E.P. which is available on 'Smash The State Volume 3'. Read more here.
5. KJØTT - 'Elektrisk' - Flesh 12" - Norway - 1980
The opening track from their self-titled MLP. Nothing like the single.

Hilarious xmas fayre. From the 'Merry Christmas 1985' flexi-comp. Read more here.
7. THE SHOVE - 'Raise The Roof Tonight' - Shove Off 7" - UK - 1981
Brings back memories of how it used to be. Heard it on John Peel who promptly gave the band's address as they didn't have a distribution deal. Wrote off and got one. So personal! This was the opening track from their sole E.P.  From York.
8. PRIVATE SCHOOL - 'Money, Guns And Power' - Full Friction 7" - Canada - 1979
Another opening track from a sole E.P.

From their sole 'Bombs Live' 7". Not sure if it's live or not - that crowd sounds fake to me!

Sole single. Other than that, I know nothing.
12. THE DICKHEADS - 'Squad Leader' - Walking Dead 7" - USA - 1980
Another sole single. From 'Frisco. They made a video of the other side which unfortunately isn't as good, see here.

Third single - taken from the album.
14. SILICONE INJECTION - 'Payday On Friday' - Self-released 7" - Canada - 1981
From their sole 'Sic Nos Non Nobis' E.P. which is Latin for 'Thus We Labour, But Not For Ourselves'. I'm guessing they hated work.
15. NERVOUS EATERS - 'Get Stuffed' - Elektra LP - USA - 1980
After the insanely good 'Just Head' single their self-titled debut album was a massive disappointment for me. All I can get enthusiastic about is this reworking of the flipside of the single.
16. THE UNDEAD - 'Listen To The Wall Beat' - Riot City LP - UK - 1984
More tribal drumming. The opening track from sole album 'The Killing Of Reality'.
17. LOWLIFE - 'Leaders' - Airout 7" - Canada - 1979
From yet another sole E.P.  I think I did the other tracks on previous comps.
18. KJØTT - 'Mannen På Taket' Flesh 12" - Norway - 1980
Another track from their self-titled MLP.
19. GO FOUR 3 - 'Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer' Zulu 7" flexi - Canada - 1985

From their second single 'Violent Visions'.
