The Best of Brought To Life - 234

1. RAW POWER - 'Power' / 'For Me' – Demo – Italy - 1983
We'll open this one with not one but two tracks from their 1983 demo which is chock full of, erm, raw power!
2. THE SCREAMERS - 'In A Better World' – Demo – USA - 1978
There's six more Screamers demos to clear up, starting with this one.
3. THE MINUTEMEN - 'Validation' – SST 7” – USA – 1980
Checking back through the blog I was appalled to find I'd only posted two Minutemen tracks. I'll be putting that right over the next few comps beginning with the opening track from their debut E.P. ‘Paranoid Time’.
4. APARTMENT - 'The Alternative' – Heartbeat LP – UK – 1979
I'll be revisiting a few classic compilations too. This is from Bristol collection ‘Avon Calling’ - the title referring to both the river and the cosmetics company's TV adverts of the '70s.
5. RAW POWER - 'X' - Demo – Italy - 1983
The shortest title in hardcore.
6. THE INNOCENTS - 'Backseat Of My Car' – The Boardwalk Entertainment Co. LP – USA - 1982
From their sole album. I wouldn't try too hard to find it - this track is head and shoulders above the rest of 'em.
7. KILSLUG - 'Bad Karma' – Taang! LP – USA – 1986
After a few sludgy E.P.s which sounded like Flipper with the world's worst hangover, ‘Answer The Call’ came out which had a nice rich guitar sound and displayed a little more urgency while retaining that morbid sense of negativity and general doom that characterised their earlier work.
8. THE SCREAMERS - 'It's A Violent World' - Demo – USA - 1978
It sure was, is, and will always be.
9. THE REALISTS - 'I've Got A Heart' – Stiff 7” – UK - 1978
Some '70s pop-rock now, with throwaway lyrics, it's true, but we have a tune and we have some handclaps!
10. RAW POWER - 'No Institution' - Demo – Italy - 1983
No handclaps in this one, but we do have a cow bell!
11. LIP MOVES - 'Guest' – Ticonderoga 7” – UK - 1979
'I'm a guest on the D.H.S.S.'  On the dole and proud. Their sole single.
12. THE MINUTEMEN - 'The Maze' - SST 7” – USA – 1980
Another 40 second masterpiece from ‘Paranoid Time’.  R.I.P. D.Boon.
13. THE OHMS - 'Teenage Alcoholic' – Northside 7” – USA - 1979
One of those great obscure powerpop singles that it's a joy to find and a crime that hardly anyone ever heard it.
14. THE SCREAMERS - 'Magazine Love' – Demo – USA - 1978
In 1978 I was 'loving' magazines too!
15. RAW POWER - 'I Hate The System' - Demo – Italy - 1983
And we all hated the system in '83, didn't we?
16. THE PRIVATE DICKS - 'Green Is In The Red' - Heartbeat LP – UK – 1979
Another catchy little track from ‘Avon Calling’.
17. THE GROINOIDS - 'Angel' – Modern Method LP – USA – 1982
From the legendary ‘This Is Boston Not L.A.’ album. Like Kilslug on speed.
18. THE MINUTEMEN - 'Sickles And Hammers' - SST 7” – USA – 1980
The instrumental from ‘Paranoid Time’.
19. PETE BITE - 'S-E-X' – Liberty 7” – UK – 1981
The superior flipside of first single ‘Bite Me – I Taste Nice’. For the A-side and more go here.
20. RAW POWER - 'You Are The Victim' - Demo – Italy - 1983
They named their debut album after this one, but the demo sounded better.
21. KILSLUG - 'Make It Rain' - Taang! LP – USA – 1986
Bloodlust. 'It's cheaper than dirt when it starts to spurt'. From ‘Answer The Call’.
22. THE SCREAMERS - 'She's The Girl' - Demo – USA - 1978
A mystery we'll never know the answer to.
23. K.U.K.L. - 'Söngull' - Gramm 7" - Iceland - 1983
A Björk-fronted experimental combo. This, their debut single, was the only thing I could really get into.
24. THE X-CERTS - 'Anthem' - Heartbeat LP – UK – 1979
A third offering from ‘Avon Calling’. As jaunty as they come.
25. NONE OF THE ABOVE - 'Feel Like A Dog' – Zanon 7” – USA - 1983
When John Peel announced he was going to play the new single by 'None Of The Above' I automatically assumed it was the N.O.T.A. from Tulsa and so I waited with baited breath. Then he played this crazed mish mash of musical styles which, somehow, I ended up getting into, big time. If someone sticks a big fat beat on this you've got a sure fire dance club hit.
***BONUS TRACKS***

The Best of Brought To Life - 233

1. THE WIPERS - 'Now Is The Time' - Brain Eater LP - USA - 1983
Third album 'Over The Edge' was not as 'proggy' as 'Youth Of America'. Probably a good thing. More songs, y'see?
2. THE SCREAMERS - 'I'm A Mensch' - Demo - USA - 1978
'I only dance when I wanna dance, to the sound of a distant drum'. A mensch is a person of integrity and honour. So now you know.
3. THE CARPETTES - 'Cruel Honesty' - Peel Session - UK - 1978
Great songs but no success - a common theme in 1978. From their second Peel session.
4. 1919 - 'Tear Down These Walls' - Red Rhino 7" - UK - 1982
The superior flipside of their second single 'Repulsion'.
5. VILE - 'White Collar' - Self Released LP - USA - 1983
One of the lesser known Boston hardcore bands as they weren't on X-Claim! or Modern Method. From their sole album 'Solution'. The best tracks would have made a great E.P.
6. N.O.T.A. - 'No Chance' - Demo - USA - 1986
This never made it to vinyl as they broke up soon after the recording, not returning until 1993.
7. WRECKLESS ERIC - 'Whole Wide World' - Peel Session - UK - 1977
Better than the single version. Legendary TV performance here.
8. THE WIPERS - 'This Time' Brain Eater LP - USA - 1983
A second track from 'Over The Edge'.
9. THE CARPETTES - 'It Don't Make Sense' - Peel Session - UK - 1978
A second track from their second Peel session.
10. THE SCREAMERS - 'Need A Head On' - Demo - USA - 1978
The electric piano / drum machine combo has never worked so well. There's a live version here.
11. VILE - 'Solution' Self Released LP - USA - 1983
The title track of the album of the same name.
12. GREEN DAY - 'Sweet Children' - Skene 7" - 1990
The best Green Day tracks appeared well into the '90s, but I always liked this one, the lead track from their third E.P.
13. THE MEMBERS - 'Chelsea Nightclub' - Peel Session - UK - 1979
From their first Peel session that year.
14. N.O.T.A. - 'Listen' - Demo - USA - 1986
Another riff-driven goodie that never saw the light of day.
15. THE CARPETTES - 'What Can I Do?' - Peel Session - UK - 1978
A third from their second Peel session.
16. THE WIPERS - 'No Generation Gap' Brain Eater LP - USA - 1983
And a third from 'Over The Edge'.
17. 1919 - 'Earth Song' - Abstract 12" - UK - 1984
The opening track from their final record. The sax was a bit unexpected.
18. THE SCREAMERS - 'Through The Flames' - Demo - USA - 1978
Proper drums in this one. Makes no difference. Always brutal.
19. VILE - 'Banned In Boston' Self Released LP - USA - 1983
A third track from 'Solution'.
20. THE CARPETTES - 'Double Platinum' - Peel Session - UK - 1978
I can't choose between the tracks on this session so it looks like you'll get all five.
21. N.O.T.A. - 'New America' - Demo - USA - 1986
Same thing applies to this demo tape.
22. THE WIPERS - 'No-One Wants An Alien' Brain Eater LP - USA - 1983
A fourth track from 'Over The Edge'.
23. FINGERPRINTZ - 'Who's Your Friend?' - Peel Session - UK - 1978
Different to the single version so you're getting it.
24. VILE - 'I'm A Punk' Self Released LP - USA - 1983
A fourth track from 'Solution'.
25. THE SCREAMERS - 'Punish Or Be Damned' - Demo - USA - 1978
And a five and a half minute epic. Love every second of it.

The Best of Brought To Life - 232

1. THE HOLLYWOOD BRATS - 'Chez Maximes' - Mercury LP - UK - 1975
The English New York Dolls? They were pretty much doing the same thing at the same time but glam went way beyond either band and it was the slightly less sleazy others that ended up hitting the charts. Their debut album 'Grown Up Wrong' wasn't even released until after they'd split up. This was the opening track. Read all about it here.
2. N.O.T.A. - 'Ultra Violent' - Rabid Cat LP - USA - 1985
Our final installment of None Of The Above begins with the opening track from their self-titled album.
3. THE WIPERS - 'D-7' - Park Avenue LP - UK - 1979
Side 2 of 'This Is Real' is a more introspective affair. This was the first track.
4. W.D.M. - 'Brains' Vaihtoehto 7" - Finland - 1985
One of the lesser known Finnish punk bands, but their 'Democracy' E.P. was up there with the best of 'em. Dig the bass lines.
5. KUDDKRIG - 'Trilsk Ventil' - Last Buzz 7" - Sweden - 1981
Meanwhile over in Sweden things were more sedate, but with a few nice na-na-na's to keep us going. Get the rest of the E.P. here.
6. N.O.T.A. - 'Sick Society' - Rabid Cat LP - USA - 1985
Another track from their self-titled debut album.
7. LOS NIKIS - 'La Amenaza Amarilla' - Tic Tac 7" - Spain - 1981
While over at WDM's blog fawning over Kuddkrig, one of his earlier posts reminded me of this fairly prolific band, and since we've had precious little Spanish powerpop on here, here's the title track from their debut E.P.
8. NORGEZ BANK - 'Springtime In Belsen' Sånn'ja Records 7" - Norway - 1980
And at the same excellent blog you can get the whole debut E.P. by this Norwegian combo.

One from a nice, raw early reheasal tape.

The title track from the E.P. of the same name.
11. N.O.T.A. - 'Self Destruct' - Rabid Cat LP - USA - 1985
A third track from their self-titled debut album.

One from the flipside of their 'Alien Boy' E.P. Unmistakeably Wipers.
13. THE HOLLYWOOD BRATS - 'Tumble With Me' Mercury LP - UK - 1975
Casino Steel was in the Brats and this is one he took with him when he joined the Boys. They speeded it up, of course.

Another rockin' Weirdos blast.

And another from their album.
17. LOS NIKIS - 'Pasión Por Los Decibelios' - Tic Tac 7" - Spain - 1982
One from second E.P. 'Sangre En El Museo De Cera'.
18. THE WIPERS - 'Born With A Curse' - Demo - USA - 1979
Available on the Wipers 3-CD box set. Essential listening.

Another catchy tune from their 'Fly The Jolly Jumper & Fight Against The Law' E.P.

A third track from the 'Democracy' E.P.

A real treat for you now - an out-take from the N.O.T.A. album.

A third track from the Weirdos rehearsal tape.
23. THE RUDE BAND - 'I'm A Punk' - Oz 7" - Australia - 1982
Another Wild Devil Man discovery. 'I sometimes walk around with me shirt tail out, I'm a punk!'  Hilarious, to a point.
24. W.D.M. - 'Confuture' - M&M Productions - Finland - 1988
One from their third E.P. 'Freedom Of Music' which had them careering off into the land of metal.
25. THE WIPERS - 'Pushing The Extreme' - Park Avenue LP - USA - 1981
And one from second album 'Youth Of America'.

The Best of Brought To Life - 229

1. THE DWARVES - 'Back Seat Of My Car' - Sub Pop LP - USA - 1990
One of my avid readers told me recently: 'Although this is essentially a '70s / '80s blog, occasionally you dip into 1990 if a certain record warrants it . . . so why the hell haven't you dipped into 'Blood Guts & Pussy' yet?  Well, he had a point!
2. THE ED DAVIS BAND - 'Fuck Each Other' - Live Demo - USA - 1978
Hmmm, lot's of swearing on this CD. Never mind, eh? Gnarly-as-fuck punk rock from the bowels of Cincinnati. Visuals here.
3. THE COCKNEY REJECTS - 'Shitter' - EMI LP - UK - 1980
The Oi! banner from now on will be waved solely by the Rejects. From 'Greatest Hits Vol.1', of course.
4. PURRKUR PILLNIKK - 'Læknir' - Gramm 7" - Iceland - 1981
After the Icelandic bands in the last post everyone seems to want more. The thing is, after their initial punk outbursts most of them seemed to develop a more mid-paced post-punk style. Interesting though. This is from their first E.P. 'Tilf'.
5. THE DWARVES - 'Detention Girl' - Sub Pop LP - USA - 1990
Straight back to the mighty 'Blood Guts & Pussy'.  'It hurts so bad, I'm so glad!'
6. HÜSKER DÜ - 'Masochism World' - SST LP - USA - 1984
From the mighty 'Zen Arcade' double album.
7. ÞEYR - 'Lunaire' - Gramm 7" - Iceland - 1983
More Icelandic post-punk. This is from their final single.
8. THE COCKNEY REJECTS - 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles' - Zonophone 7" - UK - 1980
If you didn't support West Ham then you probably weren't that interested. Somehow, it made Top Of The Pops. See it here introduced by the vocalist of The Trainspotters (who did the classic 'High Rise' single). I shit you not.
9. THE DWARVES - 'Let's Fuck' - Sub Pop LP - USA - 1990
Another low down dirty anthem from 'Blood Guts & Pussy'.
10. SPENÓT - '80 As Ever' - Demo - Hungary - 1983
When you woke up this morning I bet you didn't think you'd be listening to Hungarian new wave, did you?
11. HÜSKER DÜ - 'Deadly Skies' - SST MLP - USA - 1983
'I'd like to protest but I'm not sure what it's for'. From the wonderful 'Metal Circus'.
12. GM49 - 'A Kása Forrón Jó' - Start 7" - Hungary - 1982
