The Best of Brought To Life - 113

1. ALTERNATIVE TV - 'How Much Longer?' - Deptford Fun City 7" - UK - 1977
We'll begin with the first ATV single which takes a pop at youth culture, all of it, including punk rock. But I still can't get into their albums.
2. BAD RELIGION - 'Change Of Ideas' - Epitaph LP - USA - 1989
Since BTL was a strictly '70s/'80s collection, 'No Control' is the last Bad Religion album that qualifies. But what an album . . .
3. THE DEAD KENNEDYS - 'Short Songs' - Optional/Walking Dead LP - USA - 1980
Featured classic comp. this time is 'Can You Hear Me? Music From The Deaf Club' - a cracking selection of San Franciso bands of the era playing live. The sound is loud, raw and magnificent.
4. DIE TOTEN HOSEN - 'Wir Sind Bereit' - Totenkopf 7" - Germany - 1982
Their second single: 'We Are Ready'. Ready for what? Oodles of records, that's what!
5. ADAM AND THE ANTS - 'Lady' - Decca 7" - UK - 1978
After all the great demos they recorded for Decca, they go and bang out the tame piece of pap that was 'Young Parisians'. This flipside is fairly tame too, but at least hits the spot musically.
6. THE OUTCASTS - 'You're A Disease' - It Record Co. - UK - 1978
Teen angst from Belfast. From their first 3-tracker.
7. N.R.G. - 'Sort' - Hub 7" - Denmark - 1984
This one's a grower - their debut single.
8. THE OFFS - 'Hundred Dollar Limo' - Optional/Walking Dead LP - USA - 1980
Another Deaf Club live offering. Their speediest track by a country mile.
9. BAD RELIGION - 'Big Bang' - Epitaph LP - USA - 1989
And another from 'No Control'. 'If you share these beliefs you know I wish you well,
'cause there's no room left in heaven and there's sure no room in hell'.
10. KLEENEX - 'Aint You' - Sunrise 7" - Switzerland - 1978
From their debut E.P. and later on a 2-tracker released by Rough Trade. Live here.
11. THE FAST CARS - 'You're So Funny' - Streets Ahead 7" - UK - 1979
The flipside of 'The Kids Just Wanna Dance'.
12. VICTIM - 'I Need You' - TJM 7" - UK - 1979
And from the same year, the flipside of 'Why Are Fire Engines Red?'
13. PINK SECTION - 'Been In The Basement 30 Years' - Optional/Walking Dead LP - USA - 1980
This one's a schizophrenic little ditty from 'Deaf Club'. Very arty, and quite scary.
14. SWELL MAPS - 'Ripped And Torn' - Rather 7" - UK - 1977
Back to the B-sides now - this was on the flip of 'Read About Seymour'.
15. THE VALVES - 'Fab Front Loader' - Mike Read session - UK -1979
A cracking unreleased track from the radio now. The session also included a faster version of 'Aint No Surf Of Portobello' which I may include later, and 'Linda Vindaloo', which I won't.
16. BAD RELIGION - 'No Control' - Epitaph LP - USA - 1989
The title track from the album of the same name.
17. K.G.B. - 'Dying In The U.S.A.' - Optional/Walking Dead LP - USA - 1980
Another from 'Deaf Club'. This lot morphed into 'No Alternative' soon afterwards, taking on some rockabilly influences along the way.
18. DIE TOTEN HOSEN - 'Jürgen Engler's Party' - Totenkopf 7" - Germany - 1982
The flipside of 'Wir Sind Bereit'.
19. KLEENEX - 'Beri-Beri' - Sunrise 7" - Switzerland - 1978
Another from their debut E.P.
20. THE DEAD KENNEDYS - 'Straight A's' - Optional/Walking Dead LP - USA - 1980
And another from the 'Deaf Club'.
21. THE VALVES - 'Aint No Surf In Portobello' - Mike Read session - UK - 1979
As promised, another from their Mike Read session.
22. BAD RELIGION - 'Henchman' - Epitaph LP - USA - 1989
A fourth from 'No Control' . . .
23. THE MUTANTS - 'Monster Of Love' - Optional/Walking Dead LP - USA - 1980
. . . and a sixth from 'Deaf Club'.
24. THE OUTCASTS - 'Frustration' - It Record Co. 7" - UK - 1978
Another from their 3-track debut E.P.
25. TUXEDOMOON - '19th Nervous Breakdown' - Optional/Walking Dead LP - USA - 1980
And a seventh from 'Deaf Club'. This must be my favourite cover version of all time, thankfully sounding nothing at all like the original. Brooding, menacing and sung in German. A masterpiece - or should I say 'Ein meisterwerk'?
