The Best of Brought To Life - 047

1. THE READYMADES - '415 Music' - 415 LP - USA - 1980
From the Californian compilation album of the same name. '415' is the police code for 'disturbing the peace' which is a slight misnomer as the album on the whole is relatively inoffensive powerpop-based, but I guess you can play anything loud and indeed it was common for new wave parties to be raided for said 'offence' back in the day. And probably still is.
2. DIE TOTEN HOSEN - 'Allein Vor Deinem Haus' - Totenkopf LP - Germany - 1983
From their debut album 'Opel Gang'. Hilarious sleeve. On the whole though I seem to prefer their singles as their albums have too many nondescript songs for my liking. Nevertheless their career has been a long one so plenty of people may disagree. Here's a live version from 2009.
3. THE WIPERS - 'Misfit' - Demo - USA - 1979
So we finally get round to some Wipers. We'll start with an early demo that appeared on the CD box set version of 'Is This Real?' and the 'Rebel With A Cause' demo/outtakes LP.
4. THE NEIGHBORHOODS - 'No Place Like Home' - Ace Of Hearts 7" - USA - 1979
From Boston, this is the flipside of debut single 'Prettiest Girl'. It's by far the better song but you know what record labels are like. Judge for yourself here.
5. ŠARLO AKROBATA - 'Fenomen' - Jugoton LP - Yugoslavia - 1981
I didn't include this lot on the last compilation due to space limitations, but here they are now. From Belgrade. This is a track from the album 'Bistriji Ili Tuplji Čovek Biva Kad.'
6. THE FALL - 'How I Wrote Elastic Man' - Rough Trade 7" - UK - 1980
5th single, the first for Rough Trade. They must have released at least 50 by now, with almost as many albums alongside them. Phew. And how about this for a bit of comedy genius.
7. THE WIPERS - 'Return Of The Rat' - Park Avenue LP - USA - 1979
From the excellent debut album 'Is This Real?' Greg Sage had a style of his own. Side 1 rocks whereas side 2 is more futuristic and interesting but with less of the signature riffage and more of the piercing lead that would permeate their second album 'Youth Of America'.
8. DIE TOTEN HOSEN - 'Opel Gang' - Totenkopf LP - Germany - 1983
Title track from 'Opel Gang'. I still can't decide whether I prefer this version to the earlier single version, meanwhile here's a live version.
9. THE VIOLATORS - 'Summer Of '81' - No Future 7" - UK - 1982
This single blows away all their other stuff, with perhaps the exception of the B-side. 'There's blood on the street and the smell is so sweet 'cos another blue bastard has just gone down'.
10. TIMES 5 - 'Is Your Radio Active?' 415 LP - USA - 1980
Another from '415 Music'.
11. THE WIPERS - 'Up Front'Park Avenue LP - USA - 1979
Another from 'Is This Real?' and I promise you there'll be more!
12. PERA & THE DOGS - 'I've Been Breakin' The Law' - Kerberos 7" - Finland - 1979
This was a short-lived Finnish punky rock band that sang in English, hoping to gain international recognition. They failed. Their sole album 'Dogfood' isn't anywhere near the quality of this single.
13. DIE TOTEN HOSEN - 'Liebesspieler' - Totenkopf LP - Germany - 1984
From the second LP 'Unter Falscher Flagge'. Also available as a 12" with the Peel session on the other side. Rather camp performance here.
14. RICHARD HELL & THE VOIDOIDS - 'Love Comes In Spurts' - Sire 7" - USA - 1977
The superior B-side of 'Blank Generation' (which I quickly grew bored of). More upbeat, quirkier, better.
15. THE WIPERS - 'Mystery'Park Avenue LP - USA - 1979
Another goodie from Side 1 of 'Is This Real?'
16. THE MUTANTS - 'Baby's No Good'415 LP - USA - 1980
Another from '415 Music', especially notable as this track wasn't included in the CD re-issue of 'Fun Terminal' which included most of their recorded output.
17. ŠARLO AKROBATA - 'Rano Izjutra' - Jugoton LP - Yugoslavia - 1981
Another track from 'Bistriji Ili Tuplji Čovek Biva Kad.' The chaotic drawn out ending is worth it.
18. THE VIOLATORS - 'Live Fast Die Young'No Future 7" - UK - 1982
The pounding B-side of 'Summer Of '81'. Different vocalist, of course.
19. THE WIPERS - 'Tragedy'Park Avenue LP - USA - 1979
A third track from Side 1 of 'Is This Real?'
20. DIE TOTEN HOSEN - 'Sie Warten Nur Auf Dich' - Totenkopf LP - Germany - 1984
Another track from 'Unter Falscher Flagge'
21. THE SYMPTOMS - 'Simple Sabotage' - 415 LP - USA - 1980
Another from '415 Music',
22. THE FALL - 'Totally Wired'Rough Trade 7" - UK - 1980
Their 6th single. 'I drank a jar of coffee, and I took some of these, and I'm TOTALLY WIRED!' Fantastic video here featuring the 2 funniest guys in history.
23. THE WIPERS - 'Let's Go Away'Park Avenue LP - USA - 1979
And a fourth track from Side 1 of 'Is This Real?' I couldn't bear to leave much out.
24. THE BRAINS - 'Money Changes Everything' - Gray Matter 7" - USA -1978
A bit straight-laced this one but I've always loved the song and lyrically it's so true. It was even covered by Cyndi Lauper, so it must be good.
25. DIE TOTEN HOSEN - 'Shake Hands'Totenkopf LP - Germany - 1984
And to end with, a third track from 'Unter Falscher Flagge'.
***BONUS TRACKS***
