The Best of Brought To Life - 061

1. STEVE MIRO & THE EYES - Choke It Back' - Object LP - UK - 1980
The opening track from their first album 'Rude Intrusions'. Steve was a much overlooked co-founder of Manchester-based Object records and a driving force in the Manchester musicians collective. After 2 singles in the late '70s there were 3 more albums in the early '80s which can be snapped up on a Boutique double CD.
2. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Operator's Manual' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
Staying in Manchester, next we have the first of many tracks from the Buzzcocks groovy second album 'Love Bites'.
3. BLOODY MANNEQUIN ORCHESTRA - 'Streets Of Saigon' - WGNS Recordings LP - USA - 1984
From their sole album 'Roadmap To Revolution'. An edgy, varied, original recording from Bethesda, Maryland. Website here.
4. THE RUNNING SORES - 'I'm A Punk Star' - Demo - UK - 1976
Yeah, real punk man! Whole story here. Available on the excellent Bored Teenagers Volume 4. Get the CD here.
5. THE SISTERS OF MERCY - 'Adrenochrome' - Merciful Release 7" - UK - 1982
Second single, coupled with 'Body Electric'. All the best Sisters Of Mercy Songs begin with an 'A'. 'For the sisters of mercy, filled with panic in their eyes, rise, dead on adrenochrome'.
6. UPROAR - 'Rebel Youth' - Lightbeat/Beat The System 7" - UK - 1982
Ah, this brings back memories. Primitive just-learned-to-play punk from Peterlee. I remember those days, tanked-up on cider, catching the bus mob-style to see them play up at The White House, being shot at beforehand in the park by bored local teenagers with air rifles who considered out-of-town punk rockers fair game. Then, after the gig, sending someone off down the bank towards town at breakneck speed in a shopping trolley; carefree, pissed and happy.
7. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Nostalgia' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
Another pop classic from 'Love Bites'.
8. X-PRESS - 'Whatever Happened To Fashion?' - Demo - UK - 1980
Another solid demo available on Bored Teenagers Volume 3. You need to buy the CD here.
9. THE INJECTORS - 'Welcome To Our Club' - Demo - UK - 1977
Another demo available on Bored Teenagers Volume 3. You need to buy the CD here. Didn't I just say that? Full story here.
10. UPROAR - 'Soldier Boy' -Lightbeat/Beat The System LP - UK - 1982
From the 'Total Anarchy' compilation LP which had one of the worst sleeves in existence.
11. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Walking Distance' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
An excellent instrumental from 'Love Bites'.
12. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Love Is Lies' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
And straight after, a 'proper' song which is either a bittersweet acousto-pop classic or a dodgy-vocalled Steve Diggle effort. I plump for the former.
13. THE SISTERS OF MERCY - 'Alice' - Merciful Release 7" - UK - 1982
For me, their crowning glory. Who'd've thought I'd like anything with a drum machine? 'Alice in her party dress, she thanks you kindly, so serene, she needs you like she needs her tranqs to tell her that the world is clean, to promise her a definition, tell her where the rain will fall, tell her where the sun shines bright and tell her she can have it all, today'.
14. BLOODY MANNEQUIN ORCHESTRA - 'Man In Glass' - WGNS Recordings LP - USA - 1984
A second crazy track from 'Roadmap To Revolution'.
15. UPROAR - 'Better Off Dead' - Lightbeat/Beat The System 7" - UK - 1983
To me, the second E.P. 'Die For Me' was where it was at for Uproar. Stu, Dave, Baz and Goic were never better.
16. STEVE MIRO & THE EYES - 'Stuck For Words' - Object LP - UK - 1980
Another from debut album 'Rude Intrusions'. This one's a shortie.
17. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Sixteen Again' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
And a fifth from 'Love Bites'.
18. THE INJECTORS - 'Frustration' - Demo - UK - 1977
Available on Bored Teenagers Volume 3. You know the drill. Get the CD here.
19. THE SISTERS OF MERCY - 'Anaconda' - Merciful Release 7" - UK - 1983
Another lyrically magnificent early Sisters classic. 'Steal to feed the anaconda, will not see the suicide'.
20. UPROAR - 'It's Not You' - Lightbeat/Beat The System 7" - UK - 1983
Another from 'Die For Me'.
21. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'E.S.P.' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
A sixth from 'Love Bites'.
22. BLOODY MANNEQUIN ORCHESTRA - 'Book Of Lies' - WGNS Recordings LP - USA - 1984
A third from 'Roadmap To Revolution'. Intelligent stuff. 'I knew nothing of it, thought I was above it'.
23. THE RUNNING SORES - 'My Brain Done Hurt' - Demo - UK - 1976
Nah, fuck intelligent stuff! 'Pain in my head, maybe I'm dead, I bash it so hard, cos it's made out of fucking wood!'
24. UPROAR - 'Have A Good Laugh' - Lightbeat/Beat The System 7" - UK - 1983
A third from 'Die For Me'.
25. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Real World' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
And finally, a seventh from 'Love Bites'. What a great album.

The Best of Brought To Life - 060

1. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Fast Cars' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
We'll begin with the lead track from their debut album 'Another Music In A Different Kitchen', complete with 'Boredom' intro.
2. BLACK FLAG - 'Rise Above' - SST/Unicorn LP - USA - 1981
And then we crank it up a notch with our 'enry's debut in Black Flag, the legendary 'Damaged' LP. The distribution deal for the album was with Unicorn records who were affiliated with MCA, but when MCA president Al Bergamo heard the record he supposedly refused to distribute it because, as a parent, he found it an 'anti-parent record'. SST finally distributed the record themselves using the 'anti-parent' statement on a sticker which covered the MCA logo that was already on the sleeves of the first 25,000. Then Unicorn took SST to court and it all got ugly until Unicorn finally went bankrupt a few years later. Quite a soap opera. Meanwhile, the Target video is here.
3. SWELL MAPS - 'H.S. Art' - Rather/Rough Trade LP - UK - 1979
Opening track from debut album 'A Trip To Marineville'. 'Are you intent on making it, maybe even faking it?'
4. X - 'Suck Suck' - X - Australia - 1980

Opening track from their spiky and abrasive debut album 'X-Aspirations'.
5. HAI TEX - 'Reaganomics' - Four Dots 7" - USA - 1985

From the 6-track 'Private Dick' 7". Quite a hypnotic hook in this one.
'They call it progress, I call it social decay'.

6. THE CELIBATE RIFLES - 'Killing Time' - Hot LP - Australia - 1983
Opening track from debut album 'Sideroxylon', which is a type of tree. You'll have to ask the band.
7. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'No Reply' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
Another track from 'Another Music In A Different Kitchen'.
8. THE ANDROIDSS - 'Auckland Tonight' - Ripper 7" - New Zealand - 1982
B-side of sole single 'Getting Jumpy' though there was a very limited 12" released in 2009 with an extra track.
9. SOGGY - '47 Chromosomes' - Self Released 7" - France - 1981

B-side of sole single 'Waiting For The War'. There was the obligatory retrospective with extra tracks released in 2008 and a double LP with a live disc in 2012. Looks and sounds like they wanted to be the Dictators. Proof is here.
10. THE SLICKEE BOYS - 'When I Go To The Beach' - Dacoit 7" - USA - 1983

Summer hit time now, so that us folks in the northern hemisphere can dream. The B-side is a Hamilton Streetcar (who?) cover. Video here.
11. BLACK FLAG - 'Spray Paint' - SST/Unicorn LP - USA - 1981

Another track from 'Damaged' - the shortest one.
12. THE STRIPES - 'Ecstasy' - CBS 7" - Germany - 1979
All I'm gonna say about this one is watch the high energy and slightly bizarre video here.
13. SWELL MAPS - 'Another Song' - Rather/Rough Trade LP - UK - 1979

Another track from 'A Trip To Marineville'. Boredom creates it's own art.
14. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Get On Our Own' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
A third track from 'Another Music In A Different Kitchen'.
15. ZERO ZERO - 'Tu Es Jetzt' - Null LP - Germany - 1981
From their self-titled debut album. The song translates as 'Do it now!' The sax was a nice surprise.
16. BLACK FLAG - 'Thirsty And Miserable' - SST/Unicorn LP - USA - 1981

A third from 'Damaged'. That Ginn guitar just wails on this album. Crucial, man, crucial.
17. THE REGENTS - '17' (Uncensored Version) - Rialto 7" - UK - 1979
Not sure this is good enough for the sampler, but I just had to include their high fashion Top Of The Pops performance here. The singer's top is actually stuck together with masking tape!
18. THE SICK THINGS - 'The Sounds Of Silence' - Shock LP - Australia - 1989
If you thought some of the Black Flag tracks were brutal, you'll shit your pants when you hear this one - the Sick Things absolutely destroying a Simon and Garfunkel classic. Recorded some time between 1980-1981.
19. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Fiction Romance' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978

A fourth from 'Another Music In A Different Kitchen'.
20. BLACK FLAG - 'Padded Cell' - SST/Unicorn LP - USA - 1981
A fourth from 'Damaged'. See it in, their eyes, maniacs!'
21. X - 'It Must Be Me' - X - Australia - 1980
Another track from 'X-Aspirations'.
22. LUSTFINGER - 'She's My Love Gun' - Rat LP - Germany - 1984
From 'Harte Männer Tanzen Nicht', which means 'tough guys don't dance'. They don't write tacky love songs either.
23. SWELL MAPS - 'Vertical Slum' - Rather/Rough Trade LP - UK - 1979
A third track from 'A Trip To Marineville'. 'The weather, the leather, the weather, the leather, the weather, the leather, the weather, the leather . . .'
24. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'I Need' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
A fifth track from 'Another Music In A Different Kitchen'.
25. BLACK FLAG - 'Life Of Pain' - SST/Unicorn LP - USA - 1981
And to end with a fifth from 'Damaged'. What, no 'Police Story'? Hell, I bet you've all got it anyway.

***BONUS TRACKS***
26. X - 'I Don't Wanna Go Out'
27. BLACK FLAG - 'No More'
28. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Moving Away From The Pulsebeat'

The Best of Brought To Life - 059

1. BLACK FLAG - 'I've Heard It Before' - SST 7" - USA - 1981
I'm sure you have. And now you're gonna hear it again. From the 'Six Pack' 7", available on the 'First Four Years' CD from SST.
2. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'What Do I Get?' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1978
Third 7" (or the second without Howard Devoto). Video here.
3. THE RIVVITS - 'Alright On The Night' - Alien 7" - UK - 1978
This was the C-side of 'Saturday Night At The Dance'. Huh? Well, it was on a free 6-inch flexi-disc, y'see. There were gimmicks abound in 1978.
4. THE DICKS - 'Nobody Asked Me' - R Radical 7" - USA - 1984
From their 'Peace' 3-song 7". This is from their second 'San Francisco' phase.
5. BLACK FLAG - 'American Waste' - SST 7" - USA - 1981
Another from the 'Six Pack' 7". Classic Target video here.
6. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'I Don't Mind' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1978
Their fourth 7". 'I used to bet that you didn't care, but gambling never got me anywhere'. Top Of The Pops performance here.
7. GIRLS AT OUR BEST - 'It's Fashion' - Record 7" - UK - 1980
Second single (double A-side with 'Politics'). They were originally called The Butterflies, y'know, and weren't even a live band at this point.
8. THE QUEERS - 'At The Mall' - Doheny 7" - USA - 1984
From the 'Kicked Out Of The Webelos' 7-song E.P.
9. BLACK FLAG - 'Six Pack' - SST 7" - USA - 1981
Title track from the 'Six Pack' 7". Much better than the 'Damaged' version. Here it is live with Rollins on vocals.
10. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Love You More' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1978
Fifth single. Top Of The Pops performance here. Pete Shelley's shirts were an experience.
11. THE DICKS - 'I Hope You Get Drafted' R Radical 7" - USA - 1984
Another from the 'Peace' E.P.
12. BLACK FLAG - 'Louie Louie' - Posh Boy 7" - USA - 1981
The definitive version of Richard Berry's '50s classic, with Dez Cadena changing the lyrics: 'You know the pain that's in my heart, it just shows I'm not very smart, who needs love when you've got a gun, who needs love to have any fun?
13. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1978
Sixth single. Top Of The Pops performance here.
14. THE RIVVITS - 'Girl Next Door' - Alien 7" - UK - 1978
B-side of 'Saturday Night At The Dance'. And just a little bit pervy.
15. THE MERTON PARKAS - 'Flat 19' - Well Suspect 7" - UK - 1983
5th and final single. Shame, cos it was one of their better efforts.
16. BLACK FLAG - 'I've Got To Run' - SST 7" - USA - 1982
From the 'TV Party' 3-track 7", much overlooked as it doesn't appear to be on any CD release.
17. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Promises' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1978
7th single. Cheapo official video here.
18. GIRLS AT OUT BEST - 'Fast Boyfriends' - Happy Birthday 7" - UK - 1981

4th single. Everything you wanted to know about romance.
19. THE DICKS - 'No Fuckin' War' - R Radical 7" - USA - 1984
The most quoted song from the 'Peace' E.P.
20. BLACK FLAG - 'My Rules' - SST 7" - USA - 1982
Another from the 'TV Party' 7".
21. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Harmony In My Head' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1979
Having released 6 singles and 2 albums in 1978, all great, the lads headed into 1979 with their 9th single and Steve Diggle on lead vocal duties. TOTP performance here.
22. THE QUEERS - 'I'm Useless' - Doheny 7" - USA - 1984
Another from the 'Kicked Out Of The Webelos' E.P.
23. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Why She's A Girl From The Chainstore' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1980
This 7" was coupled with the inferior 'Are Everything'. Promo video here.
24. BLACK FLAG - 'TV Party' - SST 7" - USA - 1982
Title track from the 'TV Party' 7". It was quite a thing to hear Black Flag doing such a frivolous song back in the day. And there was a video!
25. CRASS - 'Bloody Revolutions' - Crass 7" - UK - 1980
And finally, this, which was coupled with 'Persons Unknown' by the Poison Girls. 'Bloody Revolutions, however, was much more epic. 'Where Zyklon B succeeded, North Sea Gas will fail'.
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. THE POISON GIRLS - 'Persons Unknown'
27. THE QUEERS - 'I Don't Wanna Work'
28. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Running Free'

The Best of Brought To Life - 058

1. THE POISON GIRLS - 'Old Tart's Song' - Small Wonder 12" - UK - 1979
Opening track from 'Hex'. 'If I had my time again, I'd like to come back as a man'. If I had my time again I'm not sure I'd bother.
2. ASTA KASK - 'Lasse Lasse Liten' - Rosa Honung LP - Sweden - 1986
Opening track from 'Aldrig En'. If my understanding of Swedish is reasonable, it's about an ugly young guy who can't get a girl so he steals a car to impress people but ends up crashing and killing himself. Oooh, this sampler's not very cheery, is it?
3. MOVING TARGETS - 'The Other Side' - Taang! LP - USA - 1986
Opening track from 'Burning In Water'. This record is often name checked as a classic of the era, and rightly so, it has elements of D.C. emo and college rock but is played much faster and with more hooks. And they were from Boston.
4. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Orgasm Addict' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1977
The first single after Howard Devoto left. And like all Buzzcocks singles, it's a classic. 'It's a labour of love fucking yourself to death'. Uh huh.
5. RATS & DELICIOUS - 'No Time' -State 7" - UK - 1979
One-off effort that wasn't taken seriously by anyone. No that it was meant to be.
6. THE 2x4's - 'Bridgeport Lathe' - Bessemer Process 7" - USA - 1980
When people would mention 'industrial' music I thought this is what it was. Songs about factories. Shame it wasn't cos this is a classic that gets me on an emotional level that I didn't know I had. 'Your basic ordinary guys work at Bendon Gear, cos the sound of shearing metal is what they wanna hear'.
7. OMEGA TRIBE - 'Profit' - Corpus Christi LP - UK - 1983
My favourite track from their solid album 'No Love Lost'. Nice bass.
8. THE STRANGLERS - 'Tank' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
Opening track from third album 'Black And White', my favourite Stranglers LP. Live on French TV here.
9. THE POISON GIRLS - 'Jump Mama Jump' - Small Wonder 12" - UK - 1979
Another on-the-mark feminist rant from 'Hex'.
10. ASTA KASK - 'Inget Ljus' - Rosa Honung LP - Sweden - 1986
Another track from 'Aldrig En', again, it sounds quite uplifting to the ears but the message is basically, 'I see no light, I see no hope'. Pass the rope.
11. MOVING TARGETS - 'Faith' - Taang! LP - USA - 1986
My favourite track from 'Burning In Water'. See it played live in a dank room here.
12. FRÆBBBLARNIR - 'Rebellion Of The Dwarfs' - Fálkinn LP - Iceland - 1982
This lot have been on the go since 1978 and, like many, are still at it today. This is from their album 'Poppþéttar Melódíur Í Rokkréttu'.
13. THE POISON GIRLS - 'Another Hero' - Crass LP - UK - 1980
From their 'Chappaquiddick Bridge' album, a landmark in complexity, intelligence and political awareness. A short lyrical quote won't do this song justice, so google it and understand. You might want to google the album title too.
14. THE STRANGLERS - 'Sweden' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
Another track from the 'Black And White' album. Not sure what this video is all about though.
15. THE 2x4's - 'Zipperheads' - Demo - USA - 1979
Recorded at the same session as 'Bridgeport Lathe'. Finally released on a CD in 2007. Get it here.
16. ASTA KASK - 'For Kung Och Fosterland' - Rosa Honung 7" - Sweden - 1984
From their 3rd 7" 'Plikten Fram För Allt'. An anti-army song.
17. THE MEAT PUPPETS - 'In A Car' -World Imitation 7" - USA - 1981
A rabid little track from their first E.P. Not much else that they did sounded like this. Not even on the rest of the E.P.
18. THE POISON GIRLS - 'Pretty Polly' - Crass LP - UK - 1980
Another classic from 'Chappaquiddick Bridge'. 'Anxious to please, genetic disease'.
19. MOVING TARGETS - 'MTV' - Taang! LP - USA - 1986
One of the faster tracks from 'Burning In Water'.
20. THE STRANGLERS - 'Curfew' - United Artists LP - UK - 1978
Another from 'Black And White'.
21. THE BUZZCOCKS - 'Whatever Happened To?' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1977
The B-side of 'Orgasm Addict'. Some of those Buzzcocks B-sides could have been singles in their own right.
22. THE ROCHDALE FAIRIES - 'Edelweiss' - SNT 7" - UK - 1982
Time for a cover version now, one from the mighty 'Sound Of Music'. This was the B-side of 'Three Green Bottles', their sole release.
23. THE 2x4's - 'Little Cities' - Bessemer Process 7" - USA - 1980
The flipside of 'Bridgeport Lathe'. 'Are the women all stuck at home reading all the f-f-fashion magazines, are the men down at the foundry r-r-r-repairing all the big machines?'
24. THE POISON GIRLS - 'Other' - Crass LP - UK - 1980
A third from 'Chappaquiddick Bridge'.
25. ASTA KASK - 'Det Är Snett' - Rosa Honung 7" - Sweden - 1986
And to end with, one from their 4th E.P. 'Än Finns Det Hopp'.

The Best of Brought To Life - 057

1. THE STRANGLERS - 'Something Better Change' - United Artists 7" - UK - 1977
Competent but mean-looking pub rockers who were naturally embraced by the punk crowd. First single. Video here.
2. JOE JACKSON - 'I'm The Man' - A&M LP - UK - 1979
Joe looked nothing like your stereotypical charismatic front man but he wrote a mean song which gave him the right to perform it how he wanted. This is the title track from his second album. Hilarious bad miming on Italian television here.
3. SCREAMING URGE - 'You Make It Hard' - Raw Deal LP - USA - 1982
From Ohio. They released 2 albums but since both were untitled the first is referred to as the 'blue' album and the second is referred to as the 'black and white' album. This is from the second. Live from their final show here.
4. NAKED RAYGUN - 'I Lie' - Ruthless 12" - USA - 1983
From their debut 12" E.P. 'Basement Screams'. They were an interesting band, quite original song structures for the most part, but for me their output was consistent rather than exhilarating. Live in 2010 here.
5. THE PIGS - 'General Election' - Demo - UK - 1977
A host of their early demos were released fairly recently on Bristol Archives. They were as good as, if not better than, their E.P.
6. GRATIS - 'Downtown' - BPM 7" - UK - 1979
This sounds like they were doing a cover version of the Cuban Heels cover version! Still, it sounds great so here it is!
7. THE STRANGLERS - 'Straighten Out' United Artists 7" - UK - 1977
The B-side of 'Something Better Change'. And yet there's still a video.
8. ADAM AND THE ANTS - 'Beat My Guest' - CBS 7" - UK - 1981
The flipside of 'Stand And Deliver', one of their early songs that Adam, to his credit, promised fans that he'd record and release as a B-side.
9. IVOR BIGGUN & THE RED-NOSED BURGLARS - 'The Winkers Song (Misprint)' - Beggar's Banquet 7" - UK - 1978
Chuckle, snigger, guffaw. Yes, it was Doc Cox of 'That's Life' fame. It's a dirty George Formby-style ditty, nevertheless, it still makes me smile. The B-side 'Reader's Wives' is a lyrical masterpiece but a tad dreary so I haven't included it. Instead, more dick-based humour here.
10. BLUE SCREAMING - 'Bland Hotel' - Albatross 7" - UK - 1978
Love the fairground-style cheap organ. Sole single, not about a hotel at all, but a rant against mercenary new wave bands.
11. JOE JACKSON - 'Kinda Kute' A&M LP - UK - 1979
Another track from 'I'm The Man' which was also released as a single. Kenny Everett show performance here.
12. THE STRANGLERS - 'No More Heroes' United Artists 7" - UK - 1977
Fourth single and title track from their second album. Here's the boys taking the piss on Top Pop.
13. THE TIKIS - 'Junie' - World Imitation 7" - USA - 1981
Can't believe how many bands there have been called The Tikis. This one only released this single which is something of a travesty.
14. THE PIGS - 'Nuclear Disarmament'Demo - UK - 1977
Another great Pigs demo from '77.
15. THE STONES - 'Gunner Ho' - Flying Nun 12" - New Zealand - 1983
From their sole E.P. 'Another Disc Another Dollar' though they also were featured on the 'Dunedin Double' Flying Nun compilation.
16. THE PUPPIES - 'Atmosphere' - Stiff 7" - USA - 1981
The quirky B-side of 'Mechanical Beat', also featured on their sole album 'Fun Is Right'.
17. JOE JACKSON - 'Got The Time'A&M LP - UK - 1979
An upbeat track from Joe's debut album 'Look Sharp'.
18. THE STRANGLERS - 'Burning Up Time'United Artists LP - UK - 1977
A random track from second album 'No More Heroes'.
19 . RUDE NORTON - 'Tits On The Beach' - Rogelletti 7" - Canada - 1980
Comedy punk from Vancouver slapped together by various members of The Subhumans, D.O.A. and the Pointed Sticks. Look mom, no brain!
20. SCREAMING URGE - 'Skitzo Brain' Raw Deal LP - USA - 1982
Another track from the 'Black and White' album.
21. ADAM AND THE ANTS - 'Ants Invasion' - CBS LP - UK - 1980
I'd lost interest in the Ants by this time having realised that everything was image to Adam, but I still like the brooding atmosphere this track creates.
22. THE PIGS - 'Ran Me In' Demo - UK - 1977
And a third hyperactive Pigs demo.
23. JOE JACKSON - 'It's Different For Girls'A&M LP - UK - 1979
Classic single and second album track about the chasm betwixt men and women. Video here.
24. THE STRANGLERS - '5 Minutes'United Artists 7" - UK - 1978
Another excellent Stranglers single with a classic video here.
25. THE SUBHUMANS - 'Firing Squad' - Live - Canada - 1981
And to end with, a live cut from the Marion Hall, Winnipeg, which just goes to show how overproduced the single was.
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. RUDE NORTON - 'Sea Cruise'

The Best of Brought To Life - 056

1. THE POLICE - 'Next To You' - A&M LP - UK - 1978
Well, they did have a couple of decent tracks. This is the opening track from debut album 'Outlandos D'Amour'. A bit 'rock', but enough spirit to be of note.
2. DAVID QUINTON - 'Neat Neat Neat' - Bomb LP - Canada - 1981
A Damned cover from his self-titled LP. Before this he was in The Mods and then the Dead Boys before finally going on to become a music biz lawyer.
3. UK DECAY - 'For My Country' - Fresh 7" - UK - 1980
Third single. 'Ablaze in their eyes, death is their glory, oh the honour's so great, this scheme for esteem, to relive their stories, spitting tales of hate'. Live version here.
4. RADIO BIRDMAN - 'Aloha Steve and Danno' - Trafalgar 7" - Australia - 1978
Yes, it's the much-quoted early Australian rock/punk combo with their salute to TV show 'Hawaii 5-0'. Not as funny as Splodge's 'Yarmouth 5-0', but a good rockin' number all the same. And there was a video.
5. NORMAHL - 'Freiheit Und Recht' - Mülleimer LP - Germany - 1984
From third album 'Der Adler Ist Gelandet'. Nice 'woah-oh-oh's.
6. BABY PATROL - 'Fun Fusion' - Secret 7" - UK - 1980
Sole single as far as I know. Sounds like the intro to Gloria Mundi's 'Fight Back'.
7. THE NORMALS - 'Don't Pick Me' - Demo - USA - 1979
For a band who only released one single they had a load of great demos. New Orleans wasn't only about jazz.
8. UK DECAY - 'Unexpected Guest' - Fresh 7" - UK - 1981
By 1981 UK Decay had honed their post-punk gothic sound but, thankfully, didn't look like stereotypical goths. 4th single.
9. V; - 'Wardrobes In Hell/You're A Weapon' - Vee 7" - USA - 1980
Chaotic post-punk from Boston. This is from their 'Dinner Music For The Starving' 7". They also did a 12" and a few years ago a CD became available with extra tracks.
10. MAGAZINE - 'Because You're Frightened' - Virgin LP - UK - 1980
From their 3rd album 'Play'. I wasn't a big fan of Magazine's albums but they did contain a few excellent cuts.
11. THE POLICE - 'Dead End Job' - A&M 7" - UK - 1978
The superior B-side to 'Can't Stand Losing You'.
12. RADIO BIRDMAN - 'Do The Pop' - Trafalgar LP - Australia - 1977
Here's a track from their first album 'Radios Appear'. Riffage, tuneage, the lot.
13. UK DECAY - 'Sexual' - Fresh 7" - UK - 1981
5th single. 'Silicone's in demand, curvature et al, hormones for your tea, life's so flexible!'
14. THE DESCENDENTS - 'Global Probing' - New Alliance 12" - USA - 1981
A track from the 'Chunks' sampler. Also released on their 'Bonus Fat' 12" if 'Chunks' is too hard to find.
15. THE MONKS - 'Grown-Ups' - CBS LP - UK - 1980
This is from their second album 'Suspended Animation'.
16. THE NORMALS - 'She's No Fun' - Demo - USA - 1979
Another cool Normals demo. Some later live stuff here.
17. VOX POP - 'You're My Favorite'New Alliance 12" - USA - 1981
Another from the 'Chunks' sampler. Sounds mean for such a song of praise.
18. UK DECAY - 'Jerusalem Over (The White Cliffs Of Dover)' - Corpus Christie 12" - UK - 1982
Oh, how I loved the 'Rising From The Dread' E.P.  I guess 'Werewolf' went on a bit but the 3 tracks on the flipside were all classics. Their last vinyl of the '80s.
19. NORMAHL - 'Kolonie BRD' -  Mülleimer LP - Germany - 1984
Another track from 'Der Adler Ist Gelandet'
20. MAGAZINE - 'A Song From Under The Floorboards' - Virgin 7" - UK - 1980
One of their later singles. Slower, but a grower. Live version here.
21. THE DIVERSIONS - 'Dance' - D.M. LP - USA - 1984
How about a bit of ska-tinged pop? Basically this album, 'Here It Is', was their only release, but there's also rumoured to be a 7" out there which contains tracks from the album.
22. RADIO BIRDMAN - 'Murder City Nights' Trafalgar LP - Australia - 1977
Another from 'Radios Appear'.
23. THE NORMALS - 'U.S.A.' - Demo - USA - 1979
A third Normals demo.
24. UK DECAY - 'Rising From The Dead'Corpus Christie 12" - UK - 1982
Another classic cut from their Corpus Christie 12". I'm glad to say they've reformed and their new album 'New Hope For The Dead' is a cracker. More info here.
25. THE GO-GO's - 'We Got The Beat' - Stiff 7" - USA - 1980
And we'll end with a bit of classic Go-Go's. This is the Stiff version of 'We Got The Beat'. The better version. Video here.
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. THE NORMALS - 'Memories'
27. THE POLICE - 'No Time This Time'
28. P.I.L. - 'Religion II'

The Best of Brought To Life - 055

1. THE CRAVATS - 'Still' - Small Wonder LP - UK - 1980
Lead-in track from their debut album 'In Toytown'. They were Redditch Dadaists, y'know?
2. PENETRATION - 'Stone Heroes' - Virgin LP - UK - 1978
From debut album 'Moving Targets', which had many good songs but it was all a bit slow for most of us back then.
3. BLONDIE - 'Hanging On The Telephone' - Chrysalis 7" - USA - 1978
Cover version time. The Nerves must have been overjoyed when Blondie hit the charts with this one. Video here.
4. PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED - 'Public Image' - Virgin 7" - UK - 1978
How this must have confused people when it first came out. Video here. Bass player on a chair?
5. INSTANT AUTOMATONS - 'Short Haired Man (In A Long Haired Town') - Fuck Off/Deleted LP - UK - 1982
From the 'Love Not Devotion' album which also featured Blue Midnight and the Hamburger All-Stars.
6. FRED SCHNEIDER & THE SHAKE SOCIETY - 'The Planet's A Mess' - Warner Brothers LP - USA - 1984
A short-lived project from the B-52's vocalist.
7. SPANISH DOGS - 'Saltine Crackers' - Ruff Ken 7" - USA - 1981
From an unusual but rewarding 4-song E.P called 'Meet The Spanish Dogs' which was dedicated to Yoko Ono. They came from Fort Lauderdale and released one more single 'Don't Sweat The Petty Things' and an album 'Mongol Lé Gan' before calling it a day.
8. THE FRIDGES - 'Shower Of B's' - Ink Ink 7" - UK - 1980
From their only 7" - a 4-song E.P.  Some very arty/poetic lyrics. 'Sailed as a salt from Catholic School, chided by the polished mule, learning late to eat my plate, and the inches of the rule'.
9. TREATMENT - 'Stamp Out Mutants' - Self-Released 7" - UK - 1981
Colchester space rock, anyone? More info here.
10. BLONDIE - 'Will Anything Happen' - Chrysalis LP - USA - 1978
One of the lesser-known tracks from third album 'Parallel Lines'.
11. SELF CONTROL - 'Electricity' - Dancing Sideways 7" - UK - 1981
From the 'Fear Of Rehearsals' 7". They were more a London based experimental collective than a regular band. Apparently.
12. THOSE HELICOPTERS - 'Flash Bernadette' - Bonaparte 7" - UK - 1979
From 'South Coast Towns' - their first 7". There's a cool cover version on this which i'll try and squeeze in later.
13. PENETRATION - 'Lovers Of Outrage'Virgin LP - UK - 1978
Another from 'Moving Targets'. Live at Reading here.
14. THE CRAVATS - Precinct' - Small Wonder 7" - UK -  1980
Third single, taken from their 1980 Peel session. Watch the present-day Shend grapple with a face cloth here.
15. THE METHOD - 'Taking Liberties' - Red Lightnin' 7" - UK - 1980
The second of three singles they did before releasing an album and splitting up.
16. BLONDIE - 'Picture This' - Chrysalis 7" - USA - 1978
The third single I ever bought, age 14. It had nothing to do with the yellow vinyl or the picture of Debbie licking the rim of a record on the sleeve. Or this video.
17. SPANISH DOGS - 'Cleveland'Ruff Ken 7" - USA - 1981
Another from 'Meet The Spanish Dogs'. 'I don't wanna go to Cleveland, never, never, never going to Cleveland'. Well, I live in Cleveland but probably not the same one.
18. BLAZE X - 'Rippy' - Fixed Wheel 7" - Ireland - 1978
The flipside of 'Some Hope!' Re-released on Sing Sing in 2009 minus the keyboard track.
19. THE CRAVATS - 'You're Driving Me' - Small Wonder 7" - UK - 1981
Their fifth single, a somewhat sedate but hypnotic affair.
20. TREATMENT - 'Doncha Know!'Self-Released 7" - UK - 1981
The B-side of 'Stamp Out Mutants'.
21. BLONDIE - 'Go Away'Chrysalis LP - USA - 1978
Another from 'Parallel Lines'.
22. PENETRATION - 'Shout Above The Noise' - Virgin LP - UK - 1979

Another track from the 'Love Not Devotion' album.
24. THOSE HELICOPTERS - 'World Without Love'Bonaparte 7" - UK - 1979
As promised, the cover version from 'South Coast Towns'. Originally by Peter and Gordon.
25. SPANISH DOGS - 'Atomic Shockwaves'Ruff Ken 7" - USA - 1981
And finally, a third track from 'Meet The Spanish Dogs'.
***BONUS TRACK***

The Best of Brought To Life - 054

1. THE REZILLOS - 'Flying Saucer Attack' - Sire LP - UK - 1978
'Can't Stand The Rezillos', their sole studio album, is one of the best records you'll ever own. If you aint got it, get it. There's a 'live' performance here.
2. THE JAM - 'News Of The World' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1978
4th single, better known these days as the intro to the political satire TV show 'Have I Got News For You'. Video here.
3. PENETRATION - 'Money Talks' - Virgin 7" - UK - 1977
OK, so this looks like another mostly well-known sampler, but bear with me. This was the superior B-side of first single 'Don't Dictate'. They lived just a couple of villages over from me back in '77.
4. SCUM - 'Wer Hat Angst?' - Scum 7" - Germany - 1984
Something less well-known now. This is from their '1984' 6-track E.P.  which, I think, was their sole release.
5. THE REZILLOS - 'No!' - Sire LP - UK - 1978
Another from 'Can't Stand The Rezillos'.
6. THE B-5'2s - 'Rock Lobster' - DB Recs - USA - 1978
Debut single from this long-lived and prolific Athens, Georgia based band. Video here. 'Ski-doo-be-dop . . . eeewww!'
7. GANG OF FOUR - 'I Found That Essence Rare' - EMI LP - UK - 1979
From their first album 'Entertainment!' On the whole I found it difficult to get into most of their stuff while everyone seemed to be calling them geniuses. Maybe they were, but i'm just a simple lad . . .
8. PENETRATION - 'Don't Dictate'Virgin 7" - UK - 1977
Not as good as the B-side but still worthy. Live at the Electric Circus here.
9. THE JAM - 'Going Underground' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1980
Something like their 10th single? Video here.
10. THE REZILLOS - 'Someone's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight' - Sire LP - UK - 1978
A third from 'Can't Stand The Rezillos'. Can you tell me who originally recorded this song? (Clue: it was credited to Earl Vince and the Valiants but really it was just Fleetwood Mac performing under a different name).
11. TILT - 'Każdy Się Boi Swojej Paranoi' - Tonpress 7" - Poland - 1985
From the flipside of their first 3-tracker 'Runął Już Ostatni Mur'.
12. PENETRATION - 'Life's A Gamble' - Virgin 7" - UK - 1978
Third single with sperm on the sleeve. Come on now, we've all been there. Live at Reading here.
13. THE JAM - 'When You're Young' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1979
7th single? Video here.
14. THE REZILLOS - '(My Baby Does) Good Sculptures' - Sire LP - UK - 1978
A fourth from 'Can't Stand The Rezillos' which was also an earlier single. Old Grey Whistle Test performance here.
15. PENETRATION - 'V.I.P.'Virgin 7" - UK - 1978
The B-side of 'Life's A Gamble'.
16. THE CUDDLY TOYS - 'Wolf' - Fresh LP - UK - 1979
From their first album 'Guillotine Theatre' which was solid enough, but didn't have too many stand-out tracks.
17. THE B-52's - '6060-842' - Island 7" - USA - 1979
Second single. Old ropey live version here.
18. PENETRATION - 'Firing Squad' - Demo - UK - 1977
The song was released as their second single in 1978 but I prefer this 1977 demo version.
19. THE JAM - 'Strange Town' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1979
8th single? Visuals here.
20. THE REZILLOS - 'I Like It' - Sire LP - UK - 1978
Time for another cover version, and the fifth selection from 'Can't Stand The Rezillos'. This was originally a number one hit 15 years earlier for Gerry and the Pacemakers.
21. PENETRATION - 'Duty-Free Technology' -  Demo - UK - 1977
Another cracking Penetration demo, released on the 'Race Against Time' album a couple of years later.
22. TILT - 'O Jaki Dziwny, Dzwiny, Dziwny' - Tonpress 7" - Poland - 1985
The other track on the flipside of 'Runął Już Ostatni Mur'.
23. THE JAM - 'Eton Rifles' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1979
9th single? Hilarious video here.
24. THE REZILLOS - 'It Gets Me'Sire LP - UK - 1978
Just enough space for a sixth selection from 'Can't Stand The Rezillos'.
25. PENETRATION - 'Danger Signs' - Virgin 7" - UK - 1979
4th single. For me, their crowning moment. There's a 12" extended version but that one aint as good.
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. THE REZILLOS - '2000 A.D.'
27. PENETRATION - 'Come Into The Open'
28. THE REZILLOS - 'Glad All Over'

The Best of Brought To Life - 053

1. BLITZ - 'We Are The Boys' - No Future LP - UK - 1982
Lead track from their debut LP 'Voice Of A Generation'. The sound wasn't as good as their earlier 7"s but it did have some cracking songs.
2. GENERATION X - 'From The Heart' - Chrysalis LP - UK - 1978
Another lead track from a solid self-titled debut album.
3. THE JAM - 'The Modern World'Polydor 7" - UK - 1977
The 3rd single, the middle of 3 which had 'World' in the title. The kids were confused. TOTP performance here.
4. THE SMALL ADS - 'Friday-Nite Cowboys' - Bronze 7" - UK - 1981
The third of 3 singles released in 1981. I think the word you're looking for is 'yeehaw!'.
5. THE REZILLOS - 'Top Of The Pops' - Sire 7" - UK - 1978
Yet another 3rd single. Did it get them on Top Of The Pops? Of course it did.
6. LAUGHIN' NOSE - 'Sensor Hantei' - JICC Cassette - Japan - 1985
From 'The Punx' compilation cassette, which came with a 84-page book detailing the history and discography of the Japanese punk/hardcore scene. Re-released on vinyl some time later.
7. THE JAM - 'All Around The World'Polydor 7" - UK - 1977
The second single. Marc show performance here.
8. BLITZ - 'Voice Of A Generation' No Future LP - UK - 1982
Another track from 'Voice Of A Generation'.
9. GENERATION X - '100 Punks' - Chrysalis LP - UK - 1978
Another from their self-titled debut.
10. THE REZILLOS - '20,000 Rezillos Under The Sea'Sire 7" - UK - 1978
The B-side of Top Of The Pops. Can you make out where the tune comes from?
11. THE JAM - 'In The City' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1977
Their first single. If 'Holidays In The Sun' is anything to go by, the Pistols seemed to like the tuneage on this one. Video here.
12. PHIL CANNING - 'Sellout' - Woodbine St. 7" - UK - 1979
Sole single from this Leamington Spa geezer who's backing band was Cheeky.
13. BLITZ -'Escape' No Future LP - UK - 1982
A third from 'Voice Of A Generation'.
14. MICKEYNSTEIN - 'Regards' - Jam 7" - France - 1979
From  France, specifically Orvault which is in the Pays de la Loire region. Noël, the guitarist, used to be in Teenage Lust.
15. THE JAM - 'A-Bomb In Wardour Street' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1978
5th single, a double-A side, no less. Whistle Test performance here.
16. GENERATION X - 'Kleenex' - Chrysalis LP - UK - 1978
Another from their self-titled debut album. What I wanna know however is why the Kimberly-Clark Corporation threatened the little Swiss band Kleenex with legal action if they didn't change their name whereas no fuss appears to have been made by this chart band using the name. Did they see the song as a positive advertisement for their product?
17. BLITZ - '4Q' No Future LP - UK - 1982
A fourth from 'Voice Of A Generation'.
18. THE REZILLOS - 'Mystery Action' - Sire 7" - UK - 1978
The B-side of Destination Venus, which I'm sure to add later.
19. THE JAM - 'David Watts' Polydor 7" - UK - 1978
The other A side of 'A-Bomb In Wardour Street'. A cool Kinks cover. TOTP here.
20. THE SMALL ADS - 'I Wanna Fly Concorde'Bronze 7" - UK - 1981
The B-side of 'Friday-Nite Cowboys'.
21. GENERATION X - 'Too Personal' - Chrysalis LP - UK - 1978
Another from their first album.
22. BLITZ - 'Moscow'No Future LP - UK - 1982
And a fifth from 'Voice Of A Generation'.
23. THE JAM - 'Carnaby Street' - Polydor 7" - UK - 1977
The B-side of 'All Around The World'.
24. GISM - 'Shoot To Kill'JICC Cassette - Japan - 1985
Another from 'The Punx' compilation cassette, this time, the mighty, crazy Gism.
25. THE REZILLOS - 'Destination Venus' - Sire 7" - UK - 1978
Their 4th single. TOTP performance with Faye in full Flintstones regalia here.
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. THE JAM - 'London Traffic'
27. GISM - 'G.I.S.M.'
28. LAUGHIN' NOSE - 'Hell Hole'

The Best of Brought To Life - 052

1. ZOUNDS - 'Can't Cheat Karma' - Crass 7" - UK - 1980
'Big cats, small cats, some cats are fat cats, those cats are bad cats, what we gonna do?' Anarcho punk. Lots of questions, not many answers. Still, it made us all think at the time which is more than a lot of punk bands could manage. Great song this one.
2. GENERATION X - 'Your Generation' - Chrysalis 7" - UK - 1977
Billy Idol, Tony James, blah blah blah. First single. Performance on Marc Bolan's show here with Marc losing all credibility by sniffing a carnation.
3. BLITZ - 'Someone's Gonna Die' - No Future 7" - UK - 1981
Streetpunk, Oi, did have it's moments. This was one of them. From their first release, the 'All Out Attack' E.P. 'Is this where the good times went, with his brains lying on the pavement?'
4. THE RALPHS - 'Vegetable Romp' - Demo - USA - 1980
I can only remember one single by this quirky bunch, but a retrospective collection 'Zeros, No-Ones' came out on Existential Vaccuum some time back. This is on it.
5. SHAKE - 'Night By Night' - Peel Session - UK - 1979
Formed by Jo Callis after the Rezillos split, Shake didn't make any great waves but the Peel session was definitely a winner.
6. THE FLESHAPOIDS - 'Nuke The Whales' - Trashtone 7" - USA - 1979
A satirical art-punk band from Frisco. Their sole release. The bass solo was supposedly inspired by the song of humpback whales.
7. TOY LOVE - 'Sheep' - DeLuxe 7" - New Zealand - 1980
The B-side of 'Don't Ask Me' - this is much the better song.
8. GENERATION X - 'Day By Day' - Chrysalis 7" - UK - 1977
The B-side of 'Your Generation'. 'I feel like a robot on the production line'. It's called the music biz, Billy.
9. DIRT - 'Democracy' - Crass 7" - UK - 1981
More anarcho punk now, from the 'Object Refuse Reject Abuse' E.P. - a slogan I remember spray painting on many a bus shelter way back when. DIRT itself stands for 'Death Is Reality Today'.
10. BLITZ - 'Fight To Live'No Future 7" - UK - 1981
Another scorcher from the 'All Out Attack' E.P.
11. SPEED - 'El Tiempo Mata' - Victoria LP - Spain - 1985
I'm afraid I can't tell you much about this lot except that they released a few decent discs between 1985 and 1990. This is from their one and only self-tiltled album.
12. THE KILLJOYS - 'Recognition' - Peel Session - UK - 1977
They didn't get such a blazing guitar sound at the Maida Vale studios as they did at Spaceward for their single, but Kevin Rowland's songs, whatever you might think of him, were always well-structured and lyrically interesting. From their only Peel Session.
13. GENERATION X - 'Ready Steady Go'Chrysalis 7" - UK - 1978
Third single about the old '60s pop show. Top of the Pops performance here.
14. THE MOB - 'Witch Hunt' - All The Madmen 7" - UK - 1980
Class War, Mob-style. 'Stubbing out progress where seeds are sewn, killing off anything that's not quite known, sitting around in a nice safe home, waiting for the witch hunt'.
15. BLITZ - 'Never Surrender'No Future 7" - UK - 1982
I didn't expect their second single to top 'All Out Attack', but in power and delivery it certainly does. Brutal.
16. TOY LOVE - 'Pull Down The Shades'DeLuxe LP - New Zealand - 1980
From their self-titled album. They moved to Australia in 1980, didn't like it, came back home and split up.
17. GENERATION X - 'No No No'Chrysalis 7" - UK - 1978
The excellent B-side of 'Ready Steady Go'.
18. TERVEET KÄDET - 'Saappaat' - Barabbas LP - Finland - 1984
Terveet Kadet were either brilliant or horrendous, usually the former. This is from the 'Yalta Hi-Life' compilation album.
19. SHAKE - Teenbeat'Peel Session - UK - 1979
Another goodie from the Peel Session, previously a Rezillos live favourite.
20. SPEED - 'Gabacho' Victoria LP - Spain - 1985
Another from their self-titled album.
21. BLITZ - 'Razors In The Night' No Future 7" - UK - 1981
Having been blown away by 'Never Surrender' I then flipped it over over. The song that followed nearly brought me to tears. This is the streetpunk anthem for a generation. 'Backstreet boys wear boots and braces, razor blades and angry faces, too much tension, too much beer, what the hell am I doing here?'
22. GENERATION X - 'Wild Youth' - Chrysalis 7" - UK - 1977
Second single. Is there a video? Of course there is.
23. THE KILLJOYS - 'Back To Front' Peel Session - UK - 1977
Another from their John Peel session.
24. TOY LOVE - 'I Don't Mind' - DeLuxe LP - New Zealand - 1980
The lead-in track from their self-titled album.
25. DIRT - 'Hiroshima' Crass 7" - UK - 1981
And finally a second cut from the Crass E.P. The burning question is, though, Deno's delivery of the word 'can't'. Would you call it a scream or squeal? This is the sort of thing that keeps me up at night . . .
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. GENERATION X - 'King Rocker'
27. BLITZ - 'Attack'
28. THE RALPHS - 'Mass Confusion'
29. GENERATION X - 'Trying For Kicks'
30. THE FLESHAPOIDS - 'Electro-Shock'
31. BLITZ - '45 Revolutions'
