The Best of Brought To Life - 124

1. ALL - 'Crazy' - Cruz 10" - USA - 1989
Who'd have thought All's best song would be a B-side? Well, one of the best anyway. This was the flipside to 'She's My Ex' which works much better if you're going through a break-up.
2. RIFF RAFF - 'I Wanna Be A Cosmonaut' - Chiswick 7" - UK - 1978
Title track from the E.P. of the same name. None of the other tracks sound like this.
3. MIZZ NOBODY - 'Smittad' - Self-Released 7" - Sweden - 1978
Sole release, from Klippan, in the sunny south of Sweden.
4. THE ABSENTEES - 'Tryin' To Mess With Me' - U.G. 7" - USA - 1981
Whoa - a wonderful slab o' punk rock from California of all places. Sounds like it was recorded in a muffled basement in the mid-west. This was their sole release at the time, though they did reform in the late '90s after everyone was trying to find the single.
5. ROGER RACKETT - 'Designer Jeans' - Atomic 7" - USA - 1980
Another sole single, lashing out at the fashion trends of the time. Best lyric: 'Fit so tight, I'm gonna lose my sight!'
6. THE SCABS - 'Don't Just Sit There' - Clubland 7" - UK - 1979
One from their classic E.P.  For those who can't get past 'Amory Building'.
7. BEAST OF BEAST - 'Hands Off' - My Ass 12" - USA - 1983
From their sole E.P - 'Sex, Drugs . . . And Noise'. As with much of California at the time, some of it is a bit death-rock, but thankfully not this one.
8. THE WHIZZ KIDS - '99% Proof' - Dead Good 7" - UK - 1979
From the 'Pay As You Earn' E.P.  There was one more single before they fizzled out.
9. ACTIVE INGREDIENTS - 'Bird On Fire' - Active 7" - USA - 1980
The flipside of Hyper Exaggeration. Suitably manic synth-punk from New Jersey.
10. THE BRAT - 'High School' - Fatima 10" - USA - 1980
Back to California for a track from their 'Attitudes' 10" E.P. This was a Chicano combo from East L.A.
11. KJØTT - 'Et Nytt Og Bedre Liv' - Fleske-Skiver 7" - Norway - 1980.
The final track from their debut E.P. The drummer Michael Krohn went on to play in Raga Rockers, for those of you who've kept up with Norwegian rock through the decades.
12. MOPOT - '1-2-3-4' - Suklaa Levyt 7" - Finland -1980
From their first of two 7"s. They were big Ramones and Boys fans. Can you tell?
13. THE FIRE ENGINES - 'Everything's Roses' - Codex Communications 7" - UK - 1980
Ready for some spiky post-punk? The Fire Engines output was very diverse, from the completely dischordant 'Get Up And Use Me' (the A-side) to the poppy quaintness of 'Candy Skin' which I comped earlier. 'Roses' falls somewhere in between - the better ground in my humble opinion.
14. HENRY ESSENCE - '14 Year Old Lover' - Ellie Jay 7" - UK - 1979
Sounds very dodgy on first hearing, but this bunch were in fact all underage too, so I suppose it's OK. And we all know what goes on on the Isle Of Wight in any case. This was their only single. 500 copies made.
15. THE WORST - 'Don't Be Afraid' - Mutha 7" - USA - 1982
One from their debut E.P. that I left out last time.
16. CINECYDE - 'Tough Girls' - Tremor 7" - USA - 1980
Their fourth 7" with a nice leather-clad AK47-weilding moll on the sleeve.
17. STANDING WAVES - 'Integrated Circuits' - Classified 7" - USA - 1980
Another schizophrenic synth-punk classic. Their second 7" - from Austin, Texas.
18. DAVE GOODMAN & FRIENDS - 'Justifiable Homicide' - The Label 7" - UK - 1978
The friends in question were, of course, Steve Jones and Paul Cook. The song itself was about the murder of Liddle Towers by police officers which the cororner declared was 'Justifiable Homicide'. Hard to believe, I know, but if you lived through the '70s you'll understand.
19. THE PASSENGERS - 'Two Lovers' - Epic 7" - UK - 1979
The first of two singles by this York band. The backing vocals make it a stand-out.
20. SLIME - 'Controversial' - Toadstool 7" - UK - 1978
A one-off single with none other than Slimey Toad from Johnny Moped on guitar.
21. THE SUICIDE COMMANDOS - 'Emmision Control' - P.S. 7" - USA - 1976
'Baseball, baseball, who's ahead? I gotta hold it, hold it . . .'
22. TRE KANT - 'Människar Smakar Gott' - Sista Bussen 7" - Sweden - 1982
One from their sole 7". I've a feeling I've comped this before but I can't be arsed to remove it now.
23. TUBEWAY ARMY - 'Blue Eyes' - Beggars Banquet 7" - UK - 1978
From the flipside of 'Bombers' which should never have been an A-side.
24. THE BRAIN POLICE - 'Kind Of A Drag' - Legal 7" - USA - 1980
Sole single. You'll need to amend the tag on the track properties - the band name is wrong. It was also wrong on BTL #55 so apologies to anyone who has a copy of that one - tracks 3 and 4 are both sides of the BRAIN POLICE single.
25. SGT ARMS - 'Walking On The Roof' - Active Duty 7" - USA - 1982
Sole single. There's a video on YouTube too but it works better without the images. Oh heck, here it is.
