The Best of Brought To Life - 181

1. SS-20 - 'H-Bomb Thunderstorm' - No Pretense 7" - USA - 1985
The blazing opening track from their debut E.P. 'Wealth Of Nations'. Very underrated. From Cincinnati, Ohio.
2. S.N.F.U. - 'Broken Toy' - Better Youth Organization LP - Canada - 1985
Another opening track, from their excellent debut album 'And No-One Else Wanted To Play'.
3. DEVO - 'Too Much Paranoias' - Warner Brothers LP - USA - 1978
The sound of mental breakdown. From 'Are We Not Men?' of course, their classic debut album.
4. THE NUNS - 'Media Control' - Rosco 7" - USA - 1979
Second single from one of 'Frisco's more legendary bands.
5. NO ALTERNATIVE - 'I See' - Live demo - USA - 1980
And here's another. Available on the Wingnut CD 'Johnny Got His Gun '78-'82' or the Bacchus Archives LP 'Nights In S.F. '78-'82'.
6. THE ANGRY SAMOANS - 'Permanent Damage' - Demo - USA - 1980
An early demo from the Samoans which appeared on the Shakin' Street 'Return To Samoa' album which also aired their classic version of 'Pictures Of Matchstick Men'.
7. THE MONTYCOATS - 'Mistaken' - Egmond 7" - Netherlands - 1981
Their only single, quickly picked up by Polydor hoping for another powerpo hit.
8. S.N.F.U. - 'She's Not On The Menu' - Better Youth Organization LP - Canada - 1985
A second track from 'And No-One Else Wanted To Play'.
9. TH' INBRED - 'Scene Death' - Frozen Sound Studio 7" - USA - 1985
The lead track from 'Reproduction', another underrated '85 E.P.
10. THE REDS - 'Driving Me Crazy' - Kingdom LP - USA - 1981
From their second album 'Stronger Silence' which was released on Canadian and British labels despite them being from Philidelphia.
11. THE CARPETTES - 'The Reason I'm Lonely' - Beggars Banquet LP - UK - 1980
One of the better tracks from second album 'Fight Amongst Yourselves'.
12. SS-20 - 'Drink Til You Drop' - No Pretense 7" - USA - 1985
Another track from 'Wealth Of Nations'.
13. THE THREATS - 'Spider' - Demo - UK - 1979
Available on the Dr. Strange album 'Demos And Rarities'.
14. DEVO - 'Come Back Jonee' - Warner Brothers LP - USA - 1978
The single lifted from 'Are We Not Men?' Complete with wacky video.
15. S.N.F.U. - 'Cannibal Cafe' - Better Youth Organization LP - Canada - 1985
A third track from 'And No-One Else Wanted To Play'. Just a playful horror story, I hope.
16. THE EMBARRASSMENT - 'Lifespan' - Demo - USA - 1983
Different versions are available on different releases but I'd recommend 'Heyday 1979-1983'.
17. LIXOMANIA - 'O Punk Rock Nao Morreu' - Self-released 7" - Brazil - 1982
Can't remember posting any Brazilian stuff yet so we'll start with one from Lixomania's sole E.P. 'Violencia & Sobrevivencia'.
18. THE SCAVENGERS - 'Mysterex' - Ripper LP - New Zealand - 1979
The opening track from the 'AK79' sampler. And there's a video for this one too!
19. PUNISHMENT OF LUXURY - 'Revolution By Numbers' - Demo - UK - 1980
'Now is the time to change, open your mind with range'. Available on the Overground CD of the same name.
20. S.N.F.U. - 'Mind Like A Door' - Better Youth Organization LP - Canada - 1986
A track from second album 'If You Swear You'll Catch No Fish'. Not as great as their debut but much better than their third.
21. DAVID PEEL & DEATH - 'He's Called A Cop' - Orange LP - USA - 1978
From 'The King Of Punk' album. Indeed. A bit jaunty for an anti-police song but it works just fine.
22. SS-20 - 'Regular Job' - No Pretense LP - USA - 1986
One of the more tuneful cuts from their 'More Government Now' album.
23. COURT MARTIAL - 'Gotta Get Out' - Riot City 7" - UK - 1982
Their first single. From Bristol.
24. TH' INBRED - 'History Lesson' - Toxic Shock LP - USA - 1986
One from their debut album 'A Family Affair'.
25. S.N.F.U. - 'Black Cloud' - Better Youth Organization LP - Canada - 1986
And, for me, the stand-out track from 'If You Swear You'll Catch No Fish'.

  1. I saw SNFU at Punk Rock Bowling last year and it was a bit disappointing. Good selection of songs on this comp though. I also like the Carpettes. My fave Inbred tune is "The Positive Song".

    1. I did get to see SNFU in the UK back in the early '90s and they were pretty good back then. We ALL had more energy back then!
