We'll begin with a track which I forgot to put on the last comp. Silly me. Their best single in my opinion with a Top Of The Pops performance here.
2. WIRE - 'Field Day For The Sundays' - Harvest LP - UK - 1977
We were all impressed back in the day when Wire's debut album 'Pink Flag' came out with a total of 21 tracks. Ooh, 21 songs, count 'em! Then we realised how short some of them were so we just had to be impressed by the music instead. And for the most part we were.
3. X - 'Your Phone's Off The Hook (But You're Not)' - Slash LP - USA - 1980
Meanwhile we were not impressed with X's debut 'Los Angeles' only having 9 tracks, but with Ray Manzarek producing we supposed that's all they could afford. This one was also the B-side of the 'White Girl' single.
4. DEATH SENTENCE - 'Live To Die' - Undergrowth 12" - Canada - 1985
As close to metal as I ever wanted to get. From the 'Not A Pretty Sight' mini-album.
5. RUDIMENTARY PENI - 'Sacrifice' - Crass 7" - UK - 1982
Lead track from the 'Farce' E.P.
6. WIRE - 'Ex-Lion Tamer' - Harvest LP - UK - 1977
Another track from 'Pink Flag'.
7. 2760 - 'Firework' - Adventure 12" - Sweden - 1980
From the 'Numbers' 6-track E.P. - their sole release - though they had a couple of tracks on the 'Let It Out' compilation if I remember rightly.
8. VINCE PIE & THE CRUMBS - 'Pontin Stomp' - Fuck Off 7" - UK - 1980
From the 'Street Level' compilation E.P. Would I have included it if they didn't have such an excellent name? Hmm . . .
9. X - 'Johnny Hit & Run Pauline' - Slash LP - USA - 1980
Another from 'Los Angeles'. Live from 'The Decline Of Western Civilisation' here.
10. WIRE - 'It's So Obvious' - Harvest LP - UK - 1977
A third from 'Pink Flag'.
11. DIGITAL DINASAURS - 'Baby Snakes' - Some DIY cassette - UK - 1980
'A Bagful Of Angst' was one of thousands of DIY home-made cassettes released in the early '80s, quite often they were almost unlistenable experimental affairs, but now and again they threw up a gem like this one.
12. VANDAALIT - 'Niin Se Käy' - Hilse-Levyt LP - Finland - 1980
From Hyvinkää. This was on their debut album 'Namuja Lapsille'. They were already a rock 'n' roll band before they got into the Ramones and turned punk. And who could blame them?
13. WIRE - 'Surgeon's Girl' - Harvest LP - UK - 1977
A fourth from 'Pink Flag'.
14. THE STREBERS - 'Ung & Arg' - Kaos & Skrål 7" - Sweden - 1985
The first track from the first E.P. by this Asta Kask-style band. For me, they never bettered it.
15. COMBAT 84 - 'Poseur' - Victory 7" - UK - 1982
From their 'Orders Of The Day' E.P. They were made infamous by the TV documentary 'Skinheads', but despite having lyrics preaching unity like 'skinhead, skinhead, never give up, stick together and act as one', the skinheads just wouldn't have it and it all ended in a skinhead-on-skinhead riot, like we all knew it would. Why do I give 'em the time of day? In the hope that someone will try and defend them.
16. WIRE - '106 Beats That' - Harvest LP - UK - 1977
A fifth from 'Pink Flag'.
17. X - 'Soul Kitchen' - Slash LP - USA - 1980
With Ray Manzarek producing it was no shock to find this punked-up Doors cover on 'Los Angeles'. But it works.
18. RUDIMENTARY PENI - 'Cosmetic Plague' - Crass 7" - UK - 1982
Another from the 'Farce' E.P. 'Being honest is no means of survival, avoid your inner feelings like the plague.'
19. WIRE - 'Mr Suit' - Harvest LP - UK - 1977
A sixth from 'Pink Flag'.
20. DEATH SENTENCE - 'Fake' - Undergrowth 12" - Canada - 1985
Another from 'Not A Pretty Sight'.
21. VANDAALIT - 'Omatunto' - Hilse-Levyt LP - Finland - 1980
Another from 'Namuja Lapsille'.
22. WIRE - 'Fragile' - Harvest LP - UK - 1977
A seventh from 'Pink Flag'.
23. X - 'Sex And Dying In High Society' - Slash LP - USA - 1980
A fourth from 'Los Angeles'.
24. WIRE - '12XU' - Harvest LP - UK - 1977
An eighth from 'Pink Flag', and why not?
25. RUDIMENTARY PENI - 'Zero Again' - Crass 7" - UK - 1982
And finally a third from 'Farce'. 'The end of the line where zero's the sign, a hole in the mind, deaf, dumb and blind'.
