The Best of Brought To Life - 064

1. M.I.A. - 'Modern Way' - Alternative Tentacles LP - USA - 1984
This is the opening track from 'Murder In A Foreign Place', more polished than their previous split album with Genocide with better tunes and songwriting.
2. SOCIAL UNREST - 'General Enemy' - Libertine 12" - USA - 1982
Next, the opening track from the 'Rat In A Maze' E.P. their last record with Creetin K-OS on vocals. They would re-emerge a couple of years later with a more developed style and sound.
3. JERRY'S KIDS - 'Machine Gun' - Modern Method 7" - USA - 1982
From the 'Unsafe At Any Speed' comp. E.P.  Boston gone hardcore. They slowed it down and metallised it on 'Kill Kill Kill' which is tantamount to heresy.
4. THE REVILLOS - 'Scuba Scuba' - Dindisc 7" - UK - 1980
3rd single. Some sort of underwater cartoon fantasy. Go with it. Video here.
5. THE SOFT BOYS - 'Have A Heart, Betty (I'm Not Fireproof)' - Midnight Music LP - UK - 1983
From 'Invisible Hits'. Recorded in 1979. The title alone makes it worthy of inclusion.
6. GOVERNMENT ISSUE - 'Plain To See' - Mystic 12" - USA - 1985
From the 'Give Us Stabb Or Give Us Death' E.P. with one of the best intros 1985 had to offer.
7. SOCIAL UNREST - 'I Wanna Be Heard' - Libertine LP - USA - 1985
The opening track from SU-2000 with new singer Jason Honea. Hardly recognisable from their earlier incarnation, but a great album nonetheless. I particularly like the guitar break in the middle of this one, though the last part is maybe a bit too long.
8. THE F.U.'s - 'C.E.T.A. Suckers'Modern Method 7" - USA - 1982
Another belter from the 'Unsafe At Any Speed' comp. E.P.  The Comprehensive Employment and Training Act of 1973 in America was a program which offered work to those with low incomes and the long term unemployed as well as summer jobs to low income high school students. The F.U.'s were sceptical.
9. THE COCKNEY REJECTS - 'I'm Not A Fool' - EMI 7" - UK -1979
2nd single. Stinky Turner, despite being a decent front man, was clearly one of the worst singers ever. Nevertheless, the axe-work of Micky Geggus more than makes up for it. Live version here.
10. M.I.A. - 'Small Man In A Big World' - Alternative Tentacles LP - USA - 1984
Another track from 'Murder In A Foreign Place'. Short but sweet.
11. AMBIENT NOISE - 'I Was There At The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' - Glimm 7" - USA - 1980
Such a silly song, but the charm is undeniable. 'Fingers and toes, there goes the nose!'
12. GOVERNMENT ISSUE - 'Written Word' - Mystic 12" - USA - 1985
Another great track from 'Give Us Stabb Or Give Us Death'.
13. SOCIAL UNREST - 'Good For You' - Libertine LP - USA - 1985
Another track from SU-2000. 'But in the end I've done it too, and just like you it's nothing new'.
14. THE F.U.'s - 'Preskool Dropouts' - Modern Method LP - USA - 1982
From the legendary 'This Is Boston, Not L.A.' which was recorded at the same time as 'Unsafe At Any Speed'. More of the same.
15. M.I.A. - 'All I Know' - Alternative Tentacles LP - USA - 1984
A third track from 'Murder In A Foreign Place'.
16. THE COCKNEY REJECTS - 'Bad Man' - EMI 7" - UK - 1980
3rd single. Guitar not as good as the 2nd but vocals not as bad. It's all relative. Here they are still kicking it today.
17. SOCIAL UNREST - 'Before The Fall' - Libertine LP - USA - 1986
Opening track from the album of the same title which picked up where SU-2000 left off, though slightly more melodic, in general.
18. GOVERNMENT ISSUE - 'Understand' - Fountain Of Youth LP - USA - 1984
The best track by a country mile from 'Joyride'.
19. THE FREEZE - 'Broken Bones'Modern Method LP - USA - 1982
Another from 'This Is Boston, Not L.A.' This one's about being beaten up by a bunch of rednecks. 'I've since taken up karate and I bought myself a gun, next time they want to beat up a punk I'm gonna have myself some fun'.
20. MX-80 SOUND - 'Why Are We Here?' - Ralph LP - USA - 1981
A thought-provoking dischordant dreamscape from their 3rd album 'Crowd Control'. And there's even a video.
21. SOCIAL UNREST - 'Teenage Blue' - Libertine LP - USA - 1986
Another track from 'Before The Fall'  with more great riffage.
22. THE REVILLOS - 'Hungry For Love'Dindisc 7" - UK - 1980
4th single. A cover version from the mid-'60s . . . originally by . . . The Searchers!
23. GANG GREEN - 'Rabies'Modern Method LP - USA - 1982
Can't have anything from 'This Is Boston, Not L.A.' without one from Gang Green. 'My mouth is at a foam, so leave me alone'. That's poetry, man.
24. THE COCKNEY REJECTS - 'Where The Hell Is Babylon?' - EMI LP - UK - 1980
From their debut album 'Greatest Hits Volume 1'. It was a question we were were all asking at the time. 'Where the hell in Babylon, I've heard it's lots of fun, can I get there on my bike or straight up the M1?'
25. THE F.U.'s - 'Green Beret' - Modern Method LP - USA - 1982
And to finish with another offering from 'This Is Boston, Not L.A.'  Another cover version, this time a rousing military anthem.
