From their debut album 'Dirty Songs From The Dirty Scums'. The first of many anti-police songs they did.
2. THE PRESS - 'Someone New Somewhere' - Laser LP - Australia - 1979
The Press meanwhile only released this one record: 'Fodder For The Critics'. Let the Wallabies tell you more.
3. N.O.T.A. - 'Moscow' - Unclean 7" - USA - 1984
What a joy it was when this E.P. emerged from a mass of generic hardcore at the time. From Tulsa, Oklahoma, N.O.T.A. had many generic hardcore songs of their own, but at least they had the ability to mix it up with the odd slower gem such as this.
4. INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTERS - 'Dirty Weekend' - Murder One 12" - USA - 1980
This cracker is from their sole 5-track 12". They were another Oklahoma band. This time, from Stillwater.
5. THE SUBHUMANS - 'Joe Public' - Bluurg 7" - UK - 1984
The UK Subhumans were lumped in with the Anarcho scene but had a bit more personality than that. They were 4 individuals with different musical influences, releasing their own records and tapes, cheaply, with integrity and intelligent lyrics that weren't afraid to knock the punk rock status quo. And their label, Bluurg, is still going to this day. Anyone who remembers my old fanzines may recall I had my doubts about their motives in '84 since they would never reply to my letters, even when I enclosed a stamped, self-addressed envelope. But I'm over it now . . . I think . . . Anyway, this is the excellent lead track from their 5th E.P. 'Rats'.
6. JOHNNY DuCANN - 'Throw Him In Jail' - Arista 7" - UK - 1977
Remember Johnny from 'The Best of Brought To Life 062'? Well this was his first solo single. Probably his best.
7. THE BACK ROOM BOYS - 'Mine's A Light And Bitter' - Back Room Music 7" - UK - 1985
The flipside of sole release 'The Ballad Of Vic Sampson'. The singer, Slim Tarrant, is supposedly related to TV and radio presenter Chris Tarrant. Who knows or cares?
8. MOONSTRUCK - 'Mean What You Say' - Promo 7" - UK - 1980
Love the noodling guitar on this one. From a 3-song 7" promo. Only 100 copies made. All together now: 'OoooOoooO!!!!'
9. THE HIP CHEMISTS - 'Pop Songs' - Kio 7" - USA - 1984
The chorus is the winner on this one. Find out more in the comments section at Shotgun Solution.
10. TEACHER'S PET - 'Fast Food Baby' - Demo - USA - 1979
Get it on the Smog Veil retrospective CD, if there's any left.
11. N.O.T.A. - 'Toy Soldiers' - Rabid Cat 7" - USA - 1984
Title track from the second E.P. 'Gonna get green, gonna get older, gonna get stiff, like toy soldiers'.
12. THE COMES - (title in Japanese characters) - Dogma 12" - Japan - 1983
A suitably rabid track from their 'No Side' 12" E.P. A mate of mine claimed to like their other 12" 'Power Never Die' from '86. Ridiculous. It's really bad 'eavy metal.
13. BØRRES KORK - 'Stumblin' - City 7" - Norway - 1979
One of the earliest Norwegian punk 7"s. This one's got 4 tracks. I'd call it punk-influenced myself.
14. THE CYLINDERS - 'Too Much Fun' - Prophet 12" - USA - 1982
From their sole release, a single-sided 12" E.P. Remember those? They must have been cheaper to press. Not sure the sax was needed on this occasion.
15. ANARCHY - 'City Surfer' - Invitation 7" - Japan - 1980
One of only 2 singles they released despite having many albums. If you're any good with Japanese their website is here.
16. N.O.T.A. - 'Nightstick Justice' - Rabid Cat LP - USA - 1985
One from their self-titled album. In case you hadn't worked it out, N.O.T.A. stands for 'None Of The Above'.
17. THE PRESS - 'Out Of View' - Laser LP - Australia - 1979
Another goodie from 'Fodder For The Critics'.
18. THE SUBHUMANS - 'Labels' - Bluurg 7" - UK - 1984
Another from the 'Rats' E.P. 'Labels are a subtle way of keeping us in line, divided by conformity we waste away our time'. Discuss.
19. UNNATURAL AXE - 'The Man I Don't Wanna Be' - Varulven 7" - USA - 1982
Quite a departure from their 1978 E.P. though this was supposedly recorded in 1977. Don't care, I like the guitar.
20. MOONSTRUCK - 'It's Just A Matter Of Time (Before They Drop The Bomb)' - Promo 7" - UK - 1980
Another from their super-rare 3-song promo.
21. ELECTRIC EELS - 'Splittery Splat' - Demo - 1975 - USA
How about some Cleveland proto-punk? This is where I found this one.
22. TEACHER'S PET - 'I'm Henry The 8th I Am' - Demo - USA - 1979
We haven't had a daft cover version for ages. Problem rectified.
23. THE COMES - 'Panic' - Dogma 12" - Japan - 1983
Another from the excellent 'No Side' 12" E.P.
24. BØRRES KORK - 'Pop Star' - City 7" - Norway - 1979
Another track from their E.P.
25. N.O.T.A. - 'Summer Of '82' - Rabid Cat LP - USA - 1985
And finally, another from their self-titled album.
