The Best of Brought To Life - 088

1. RUDIMENTARY PENI - '1/4 Dead' - Corpus Christi LP - UK - 1983
First track on the Corpus Christi side of 'Death Church'. 'Three quarters of the world are starving, the rest are dead, overdosed on insensitivity, nail-varnished to crosses'.
2. WIRE - 'Dot Dash' - Harvest 7" - UK - 1978
Their third single. As always, arty lyrics which are difficult to pin down. 'Driven by self-propulsion, turning right across the stream, the risks increased with sustained leisure, courting death, so ill at ease'.
3. THE DICKIES - 'Paranoid' - A&M 7" - USA - 1978
Their debut single which blows the original out of the water. Also available as a 10" white vinyl affair. Video here.
4. GANG GREEN - 'Terrorize' - Taang! 7" - USA - 1984
Meanwhile there were no gimmicks with Gang Green's 'Sold Out' 7", just high speed mayhem.
5. FOOT AND MOUTH - 'Fossos' - No Penis No God 12" - Australia - 1986
From sole release 'The Prophecy Of Fossos'. 7 tracks. Two of 'em went on to form 'God'.
6. JOHN HEGLEY & THE POPTICIANS - 'I Saw My Dinner On TV' - Flass Fish 12" - UK - 1988
From a 3-track 12", with Robyn Hitchcock on piano, no less!
7. SHRUG - 'The Van With Square Wheels' - Our Mam's Records 12" - UK - 1988
From the 'Neville Wanless' E.P. If The Fall had started in Middlesbrough they may have sounded like this.
8. WIRE - 'Options R' Harvest 7" - UK - 1978
The flipside of 'Dot Dash'.
9. THE ROMANS - 'Black' - Demo - USA - 1982
The Romans were one of Los Angeles’ first super-groups with members of the budding art/punk scene which swept Southern California in the early 80’s. They formed in the ashes of Human Hands and Monitor, and featured ex-members of Bpeople, The Deadbeats, 45 Grave, The Consumers and Green On Red.
10. GANG GREEN - 'Sold Out'Taang! 7" - USA - 1984
Title track from the 7" of the same name. With some slower bits for a change.
11. RUDIMENTARY PENI - 'Inside'Corpus Christi LP - UK - 1983
First track on the Rudimental Human side of 'Death Church'. 'No longer want to listen to your insane lies, or call for the blood of those who've died, or lust for the tears of another to be cried, no longer want to suffer this pain inside'.
12. WIRE - 'Outdoor Miner' - Harvest 7" - UK - 1978
Fourth single. Apparently, it's an abstract interpretation of the life experience of an insect, the serpentine miner, which eats the chlorophyll in holly leaves. Graham Lewis wrote it while watching a BBC nature documentary.
13. THE DICKIES - 'Eve Of Destruction' A&M LP - USA - 1978
From their debut LP 'The Incredible Shrinking Dickies', a rip-roaring going-over of the 1965 P.F. Sloan classic. A censored version was also released as their second single, which was one of the first singles I ever bought.
14. HAPPY HATE ME NOTS - 'Things Wearing Thin' - Waterfront LP - Australia - 1988
Despite a host of solid singles and E.P.s, this was the opening track from their sole studio album 'Out'.
15. THE RATS - 'Can't Stand Back' - Whizeagle LP - USA - 1983
A much neglected band from Portland, Oregon. This is from their third album 'In A Desperate Red'.
16. WIRE - 'Sand In My Joints' - Harvest LP - UK - 1978
A track from second album 'Chairs Missing'.
17. GANG GREEN - 'Skate To Hell' Taang! 7" - USA - 1985
Then Gang Green went metal! Well, almost. This was catchy enough to forgive them, even though my skating days were long since over.
18. RUDIMENTARY PENI - 'Nothing But A Nightmare' Corpus Christi LP - UK - 1983
Second track on the Rudimental Human side of 'Death Church'.
19. IMPACT - 'Non C'È Pas Per Noi' - Blu Bus 12" - Italy - 1986
From the 'Attraverso L'Involucro' E.P.
20. THE CHUD - 'Cosmic One' - Love's Simple Dreams LP - Germany - 1986
Berlin neo-psychedelia anyone? This was the opening track from their debut album 'Silhouettes Of Sound'.
21. THE ROMANS - 'It's A Lie' - Demo - USA - 1982
Another Romans demo. Both tracks are available on the CD version of 'You Only Live Once'.
22. GANG GREEN - 'Alcohol'Taang! 7" - USA - 1985
The flipside of 'Skate To Hell'. 'I'd rather drink than fuck'. The words of a true alcoholic.
23. THE DICKIES - 'Give It Back'A&M 7" - USA - 1978
Third single, just when we were beginning to think they were primarily a covers band. Live in '85 here.
24. RUDIMENTARY PENI - 'Dutchmen' Corpus Christi LP - UK - 1983
The closing masterpiece on 'Death Church'. 'It's just the same in Northern Ireland, Poland and Afghanistan, they're just fighting for the right to enforce their own oppression through the bigotry and blindness of their moral law'. Amen.
25. WIRE - 'Question Of Degree' - Harvest 7" - UK - 1979
And finally, Wire's fifth single. Nice corpse sleeve. Live on Rockpalast here.
