The Best of Brought To Life - 051

1. THOUGHT CRIMINALS - 'Fuck The Neighbours' - Doublethink LP - Australia - 1980
We'll start with a track from the mighty Thought Criminals' debut album, 'Speed, Madness and Flying Saucers', which is a fair description of the content.
2. THE ACCURSED - 'Accursed' - Wreck Em LP - UK - 1983
This is the lead-in track from their debut album 'Aggressive Punk' which, again, is a fair description of the content but, additionally, it had an in-your-face punk rock sleeve so you knew exactly what you were getting.
3. OUT OF ORDER - 'Wasted Youth' - H'art Musik LP - Germany - 1981
From their sole album 'Open Prison'. It sounds very English due to the English vocalist. They were from Herford which has a British army camp so I imagine he was connected to that. Let me know if i'm off-base here.
4. ABRASIVE WHEELS - 'Shout It Out' - Riot City LP - UK - 1983
From their first album 'When The Punks Go Marching In'. I'm one of those people who loved the first album and hated the second. Here's the 'Army Song' from a few years back at CBGBs.
5. THE ZEROS - 'Easy Way Out' - Peel Session - UK - 1977
From their excellent Peel session. I think I had this on an earlier BTL CD but it was a track short and poorer quality.
6. THE NOVELS - 'Son Of Sam' - Novelty 7" - Canada - 1980
From Burnaby, British Columbia. This was the superior B-side to 'I'm Being Followed' - their sole release.
7. VILLAGE PEOPLE - 'Food Fight' - RCA 7" - USA - 1981
Forget your YMCA outfits and silly dance routines, grab hold of your wieners and have a food fight!!! Village People went punk for one song only, and this is it. You do not want to hear the A-side.
8. THE F-MODELS - 'Smells Like Sex' - Rehearsal Demo - USA - 1983
F-Models were from Akron, Ohio. They released two singles in '81/'82 and intended to release an album the following year but it never materialised. This would have been on it.
9. EMPTY VESSELS - 'Loony' - Own Label 7" - UK - 1979
The flipside of their only single 'Too Much Trouble'. I'm not sure the sax or the speeded up ending were needed, but hey, that's just me.
10. WASTED LIVES - 'Divorce' - Spoken 7" - Canada - 1979
From a split single with the Big Black Puppets, with whom they shared their singer. The riffage on this track is about as original and brilliant as there is.
11. ABRASIVE WHEELS - 'Mayday'Riot City LP - UK - 1983
Another track from 'When The Punks Go Marching In'.
12. LOADED DICE - 'Keep Your Dress On' - WEA LP - Australia - 1979
Power rock from the land of Oz. Perth, specifically. This was on their sole album 'No Sweat' although there were a couple of singles too.
13. THE BLACK-EDDS - 'Jimmy 2-Stroke (S.E.C.K.S.)' - Acne 7" - UK - 1980
From their sole 3-track single 'Isn't It Strange'. Very illiterate. Very Pork Dukes.
14. THE VISITORS - 'Take It Or Leave It' - NRG 7" - UK - 1978
Sole single. I can think of a few '70s American bands that clearly influenced them here, but the pace of the song lifts it above all that.
15. THOUGHT CRIMINALS - 'Winston Smith' - Demo - Australia - 1979
Available on the 'Chrono-Logical' album or free from the band's website. Read more here.
16. THE ACCURSED - 'Going Down'Wreck Em 7" - UK - 1984
Their only 7", which is more musically accomplished than the albums. Good thing or bad? Discuss.
17. THE SOFT BOYS - 'Which Of Us Is Me?' - Studio Outtake - UK - 1978
Hard to believe it never made it onto a record back in the day, but it's available on a couple of bootlegs, at least.
18. ABRASIVE WHEELS - 'Just Another Punk Band'Riot City LP - UK - 1983
A third track from 'When The Punks Go Marching In'.
19. VICE SQUAD - 'Out Of Reach' - Riot City 7" - UK - 1982
I wasn't a huge Vice Squad fan, nor did I fantasize about Beki Bondage. I was always very fond of this though, their third 7".
20. NOT FOR SALE - 'War Economy' - Rabid Cat 7" - USA - 1984
Ah, this takes me back. From their first E.P. 'A Few Dollars More'. I used to distribute Rabid Cat records (in small amounts) back in the mid '80s, before Stacey and Laura went off to sell real estate.
21. SHONEN KNIFE - 'Miracles' - Zero LP - Japan - 1983
How cute is this song? From their first vinyl. Does anyone not know that Shonen Knife were an all-girl trio? Still around and rockin' today. Here's the proof.
22. THE GOLINSKI BROTHERS - 'Bloody' - Badge 7" - UK - 1980
Their sole release. Read all about them here.
23. THE CURE - 'Jumping Someone Else's Train' - Fiction 7" - UK - 1979
The third single. 'Don't say what you mean you might spoil your face, if you walk in the crowd you won't leave any trace, it's always the same, you're jumping someone else's train'.
24. THE ZEROS - 'Nice Girls' - Peel Session - UK - 1977
Another from their classic Peel Session.
25. ABRASIVE WHEELS - 'Gotta Run'Riot City LP - UK - 1983
And to end with a fourth from 'When The Punks Go Marching In'. I told you it was good.
