The Best of Brought To Life - 027

1. ONE WAY SUBWAY - 'Jesus Loves Me' - No Fun 7" - Holland - 1978
So, we start to the dulcet tones of Jesus Christ Superstar before these Dutch boys tell us how much they've rejected him. They cared enough to write a song about him though.
2. MAGAZINE - 'Rhythm Of Cruelty' - Virgin 7" - UK - 1979
This must have been, what, their 4th single? I much prefer their singles to the morbid introspectiveness of most of their album output. Nevertheless, this should have been a hit. Now brush up on your Spanish.
3. THE OUTSIDERS - 'Vital Hours' - Raw Edge LP - UK - 1978
The blazing opening track from the 2nd LP - 'Close Up'. Also available on a 'Best Of' CD called 'Vital Years'.
4. POP RIVETS - 'Fun In The UK' - Hipocrite LP - UK - 1979
The opening track from their 'Greatest Hits' LP which, hilariously, was their first record.
5. VITAMINE - 'Annie Tendresse' - Barclay 7" - France - 1980
Superior French pop-punk, recorded in London.
6. SUBHUMANS - 'Death Was Too Kind' - Quintessence 12" - Canada - 1979
From their second release, a great 4-track 12". Everyone loves 'Slave To My Dick', and though it's good, I doubt it'll make this compilation.
7. LOCAL OPERATOR - 'Pressure Zone' - Virgin 7" - Denmark - 1979
Now for a bit of ska-influence. This Danish lot were fronted by Jo Broadbery who make quite a few catchy records until his untimely death in 1987.
8. STARSHOOTER - 'Get Baque' - Pathé 7" - France - 1978
Cover version time. Nothing quite like a French Beatles knees-up.
9. RESTRICTED HOURS - 'Getting Things Done' - RAR 7" - UK - 1979
This was actually The Astronauts under an assumed name. From a split E.P with The Syndicate. Strange but compelling.
10. MAJOR ACCIDENT - 'Mr Nobody' - Step Forward 7" - UK - 1983
From the murder capital of the North East. Very apt that they adopted Clockwork Orange imagery. Good band though. This was their second single.
11. THE PLUGZ - 'El Clavo Y La Cruz' - Fatima LP - USA - 1981
Fantastic track from their 2nd LP 'Better Luck' which was more polished than 'Electrify Me' but it did have the better tunes.
12. POP RIVETS - Hipocrite' - Hipocrite LP - UK - 1979
Another wonderfully lo-fi D.I.Y. classic from the 'Greatest Hits' LP.
13. POLITBURO - 'How To Disconnect Your Mind . . .' - Arabella 7" - France - 1981
Weird French ska-tinged madness that you can't help but love. It has screams, barks, the lot!
14. SMIERC KLINICZNA - 'Sahara' - Tonpress 7" - Poland - 1984
No idea what this is all about but it's jaunty Polish indie and pretty enjoyable. There was a lot of it around at the time. My Polish pals loved to trade records as there was no other way they could afford imports with the Polish economy the way it was.
15. THE MUTANTS - 'Love Song' - Demo - USA - 1980
You can find this on the CD version of 'Fun Terminal' released on White Noise over a decade ago. The album itself is an understated grower. This should have been on it.
16. STARSHOOTER - 'A Toute Bombe' - Pathé Marconi EMI LP - France - 1978
From their first LP 'Starshooter', which proved that they could write their own songs too.
17. MAJOR ACCIDENT - 'Leaders Of Tomorrow' - Flicknife 7" - UK - 1983
Their gloriously hopeful 4th single. I remember shouting along to this at gigs, and even though the dream wasn't realised the hope it gave kept many of us fighting.
18. POP RIVETS - '(I'm Just A) Satellite (For Your Love)' - Hipocrite LP - UK - 1979
From their 2nd LP - 'Empty Sound From Anarchy Ranch' - which would have been great except for the dodgy live section in the middle.
19. SUBHUMANS - 'Fuck You' - Quintessence 12" - Canada - 1979
Another from the 4-track 12" E.P.
20. THE OUTSIDERS - 'Fixed Up' - Raw Edge LP - UK - 1978
Another track from the 'Close Up' LP
21. MAGAZINE - 'My Mind Aint So Open' - Virgin 7" - UK - 1978
The B-side of debut 7" 'Shot By Both Sides'. 'But why not give us the A-side' you ask? Oh alright then - sound and visuals here.
22. MUSCLE BEACH - 'Let's Get Dumb' - Dumb 7" - USA - 1980
Sole release from this Milwaukee combo. I know nothing more about them, but what a great song with some excellent guitar-work.
23. LOCAL OPERATOR - 'The Untouchables' - Virgin 7" - Denmark - 1979
The B-side of 'Pressure Zone'.
24. GUILTY RAZORS - 'Wake Up' - Demo - France - 1979
From the unreleased LP which was finally bashed out by Seventeen records a few years ago. Is it possible to have too much fuzz on a guitar? Of course not!
25. POP RIVETS - 'Anarchy Ranch' - Hipocrite LP - UK - 1979
The title track from the second LP. Cowboy chaos abound!
***BONUS TRACKS***
26. THE OUTSIDERS - 'Calling On Youth'
27. MAGAZINE - 'Shot By Both Sides'
28. THE SUBHUMANS - 'Firing Squad'
29. THE POP RIVETS - 'Hang Loose Mongoose'
