The Best of Brought To Life - 153

1. THE PIXIES - 'Caribou' - 4AD MLP - USA - 1987
I was so dumb I didn't bother trying to check this lot out in '87 because the name sounded twee. When I did finally get to hear them it took me a few listens to get them, but when I did, oh mama! The lead track from first vinyl 'Come On Pilgrim'.   'I live cement, I hate this street, give dirt to me, I bite lament, this human form where I was born, I now repent . . . Cariboooooooooooooouuuuuu'.
2. GAUZE - 'Pressing On' - Selfish MLP - Japan - 1986
I wouldn't check out the Pixies because I was busy bouncing around the room to stuff like this. The opening track from 'Equalizing Distort'.
3. THE RECIPIENTS - 'Lunatic' - P.R. 7" - USA - 1981
Sole single, from Houston, Texas. Read more here. 'No I'm not!'
4. THE PAYOLAS - 'T.N.T.' - A&M 12" - Canada - 1980
From their 'Introducing' E.P. or the flipside of 'Juke Box'.
5. THE SLITS - 'Vindictive' - Peel Session - UK - 1977
From their classic first Peel session.
6. THE NEW MODELS - 'Permanent Vacation' - Modern Method 7" - USA - 1981
The superior flipside of first single 'Shattered Windows'.
7. SYSTEMATIC DEATH - 'Hi' - Selfish 7" - Japan - 1986
The opening track from their second blazing E.P. 'Flash Back'.
8. THE PIXIES - 'Vamos' - 4AD MLP - USA - 1987
A nice bilingual effort from 'Come On Pilgrim'.
9. REVERSE - 'Local Trash' - Whiplash 12" - USA - 1980
From their sole E.P. 'Synchysis', whatever that means. From New York.
10. PROPAGANDA - 'Two Lovers' - Nu Disk 10" - UK - 1980
From their 'Calling On Moscow' E.P. This was originally released on a single as The Passengers, but why the name changed, I have no idea.
11. THE GIZMOS - 'Progressive Rock' - Gulcher LP - USA - 1980
From their split album ('Hoosier Hysteria') with Dow Jones and The Industrials.
12. THE DEAD KENNEDYS - 'Kepone Kids' - Demo - USA - 1978
An early version of 'Kepone Factory' - much slower with different lyrics.
13. GAUZE - 'Crash The Pose' - Selfish MLP - Japan - 1986
In the early/mid '80s lots of punk rockers became vegetarian. Sometimes out of moral outrage but often just to fit in and, for the boys in particular, to increase their chances of a grungey shag. Gauze saw through all this and weren't having it. 'Crash the pose, crash the lie, eat meat, fuck off the vegetarian!'
14. THE PIXIES - 'Isla De Encanta' - 4AD MLP - USA - 1987
Another from 'Come On Pilgrim', you probably recognize it from here.
15. SYSTEMATIC DEATH - 'Island (From Hashi)' - Selfish 7" - Japan - 1986
From an enchanted island to a scary one, no doubt. From their 'Flash Back' E.P.
16. THE RECIPIENTS - 'Constitution' - P.R. 7" - USA - 1981
The flipside of 'Lunatic'.
17. THE SLITS - 'Shoplifting' - Peel Session - UK - 1977
Another from their first Peel session. 'Put the cheddar in the pocket, put the rest under the jacket, talk to the cashier, he won't suspect, and if he does, do a runner!'
18. ADAM AND THE ANTS - 'Bathroom Function' - Demo - UK - 1978
One from the Decca demos. Dirty boy!

19. THE GIZMOS - 'Bible Belt Lady' - Gulcher LP - USA - 1980
Another from 'Hoosier Hysteria'. Very catchy.
20. THE ROMFORD STOMPERS - 'Dead Girls' - Right Over The Top 7" - UK - 1981
Their sole release was a split single with Mary And Ken. Pretty controversial at the time. Read more here.
21. THE PIXIES - 'Holiday Song' - 4AD MLP - USA - 1987
A fourth from 'Come On Pilgrim'.
22. PROPAGANDA - 'Cowboys Alone' - Nu Disk 10" - UK - 1980
No, not a Brokeback Mountain affair, but a nice little tale of bestiality.
23. THE DEAD KENNEDYS - 'Kidnap' - Demo - USA - 1978
An unreleased early demo which would have got a much higher billing if not for the one-channel dropout early on.
24. THE PAYOLAS - 'Juke Box' - A&M 12" - Canada - 1980
Another from the 'Introducing' E.P. or a single on Illegal.
25. THE SLITS - 'Instant Hit' - Peel Session - UK - 1978
One from their second Peel Session. Different from the album version.
